Senior Category Manager (12 Month FTC)
Always at the company's side and ready to help, we offer a ton of professional services – from finance to legal, risk to corporate affairs – which all keep our business running smoothly.
Everyday finance at Virgin Media is pretty different from everyday finance in other companies. You could be doing anything from negotiating movie or sports contracts to forecasting risk or building financial models.
It’s not surprising we have so much going on, given we sit at the front line of pretty much every area in the business. And with Liberty Global as our parent company, you could find yourself sharing best practice with partners abroad, heading up mergers and acquisitions, or working on any other opportunity that pops up from being part of a highly sophisticated international company.
As any finance professional knows, learning and development are key to a successful career – and we want to be really supportive in this, especially as the need for soft skills and digital know-how becomes more important in our roles. We’re also massively proud of our graduate trainees and undergraduate interns, too.
With the heaviest of heavyweight companies all now fighting for a slice of our sector’s pie, it’s an incredibly exciting time to work in finance for the UK’s fastest broadband provider (that’s us, by the way).
If you’re looking for the department that covers people, we’re your … um … people. Whether we’re hiring them, developing them or looking out for their wellbeing, we’re the ones making sure that our valued employees are A-Ok.
We help to shape healthy careers, where everyone feels appreciated, gets top-class work/life balance and is rewarded for the amazing effort they put in every day. We work with leaders across the business and give them the tools they need to look after their teams. We enable everyone to thrive and love what they do.
We’re here for support if times get tough. We help everyone to make decisions that reflect our Purpose, Values and policies. We champion diversity and inclusion. And we shape organisational structures, making sure everyone knows their role, and that every role has a clear purpose.
Loads of companies have legal eagles like us, but at Virgin Media, we’re so much more than lawyers. Given the size of our business, we’re a small (but perfectly formed, thanks) in-house team. This works brilliantly for us: we all cover huge amounts of interesting work which throws us out of our comfort zones and forces us to think outside the box to come up with solutions – just like the creative types who surround us.
Every single day, we test boundaries, take risks and challenge the normal to find the best route for the business. And because we’re all individuals, we’re keen to chip in with ideas and test each other’s thinking and to get the best outcomes.
If you work here, you’ll work across the whole business and enjoy a bird’s eye view – which means you’ll be able to join the dots and spot potential risks and challenges that other functions might miss.
We’re proud of who we are and what we do at Virgin Media. And we’re well aware we couldn’t do it without our super-important external suppliers. As a commercially focussed team, we build connections that really matter between existing, or prospective, suppliers and our internal stakeholders.
We assess supplier relationships to make sure we get the value, quality, support and performance we need to protect the Virgin Media brand and interests, while maintaining awesome, lasting relationships. The programmes we work on go right to the heart of the business, which means our job’s consistently interesting, strategic and critical – this is Virgin Media, after all. Not only that, we’re a sociable, supportive team, who recognise effort and celebrate success. Ambitious and focussed we may be, but we do it with a smile and a heartfelt service.
Someone’s got to make the sensible, well-thought-out decisions around here. We work across the business, supporting the management team to do just that.
Whether it’s making sure we comply with OFCOM, FCA or SOX legislation or investigating activities that minimise revenue leakage, we study the facts, figures and information to provide independent, advisory-style and assurance support.
We flag and reduce the risk of company decisions or activities causing problems, going awry or being illegal (which just isn’t us, to be fair).
We’re a big business, so it’s really important we focus – all the time – on how we communicate with our people, our customers and the wider world. In Corporate Affairs, that’s what we do, covering internal and external communications, public policy and regulatory affairs as well as sustainability and regional affairs.
Within our awesome communications teams, we have a bunch of wordsmiths who carefully craft our messaging so it’s totally on point (just like this). We’re a creative, engaging brand and crisp, clean communication is crucial when dealing with the media as we promote and protect our company and reputation 24/7, whether we’re proudly revealing great new products and services or firefighting if an issue arises.
Our internal communications team are a focused, creative and passionate bunch. Their challenge is to bring the Virgin brand to life for our people. Making sure we have a culture our people want to rave about, ensuring everyone has the information they need and telling our Virgin Media story in a meaningful and magical way.
But we don’t just talk the talk. Our public policy and regulatory affairs team works closely with the Government and regulatory authorities to make sure that the rules of the game work to our advantage. The team fights Virgin Media’s corner, lobbying on issues or legislation that affects us.
The sustainability team support Virgin Media in giving back to the world, managing our corporate responsibility efforts, charity partnerships and environmental policies and process. After all, we want to grow the business in a way that’s sustainable, charitable and in line with our values and commitments.
Our Regional Affairs team looks after Virgin Media’s relationships with local government and councils building connections that really matter, which is crucial as we continue to expand our ultrafast broadband network across the UK.
Workspaces should rock and roll, that’s our mantra. We’re in the business of creating environments that are engaging, fun and fresh. We’re ambassadors for sustainability, drivers of employee satisfaction and promoters of positive behaviours.
It’s not just where our people work, it’s also how they work. We’re upgrading. Creating spaces that are sleeker, brighter and decked out with the latest tech and the best services to enable super-slick working. We support modern and meaningful cultural change – introducing activity based working and ensuring that our SMART working principles can be put to best use.
It’s not just about bricks and mortar either; we also take care of our fleet vehicles. These portable offices have to be safe, well equipped and ready for action at the drop of an engineer’s hat.
So yeah, we’re diverse. From the analytical number crunching to the big-thinking creative, shaping the future of workplace culture here at Virgin Media, there’s something for just about anyone.
We’re hot of the press; a freshly formed team, built to lead the reinvention of how Virgin Media works. We champion and support our crucial journey towards being a truly agile, providing independent and consistent view points on all change initiatives. We’re a diverse bunch; we’re coaches, mentors, facilitators and enablers. We’re all about simplification and digitisation, driving change with a complete redesign of how we work.
We arm our brilliant people and teams with the right knowledge, values, principles and tools to ‘Be Agile’. We’re not about faster delivery; we’re about better products, services and experiences for our customers and our people. We love a good plan and some tangible milestones, but we count our successes as the value and improvements we create.
