What does a Senior GL Accountant do at Virgin Media?

The Senior GL Accountant is part of the LG UK Shared Service Centre’s Inter-company team within the Financial Accounting department and is responsible for complete, on-time and accurate monthly financial reporting for Liberty Global’s headquarters in Amsterdam and London. In addition to the usual corporate departments Liberty Global has centralized development of group technology, procurement and entered into complex financing agreements. This adds a lot of complexity and challenges to the accounting processes. The Senior GL Accountant oversees and monitors these processes. The Senior GL Accountant has regular meetings with various departments to make sure activities and priorities are aligned and partners with Group Reporting, Financial Control and Business Control.

The duties of a Senior GL Accountant are wide ranging, but ultimately you will be involved in;

* Responsible for GL accounts and sub-ledgers to be monitored, specified, reconciled and analysed. To do this the Senior GL Accountant works hands-on with the team, and initiates and hosts monthly alignment meetings with the various sub-departments;
* Post and validate journals. The Senior GL Accountant ensures the all journal entries are accompanied by proper back-up to explain why the entry is made. For this the Senior GL Accountant needs to be knowledgeable on US-GAAP requirements as well as on audit requirements. The Senior GL accountant knows how to translate complex contracts, risks and day-to-day business into financial impact;
* Responsibility for Month-End Reporting. On a monthly basis our financial statements need to be reported to various departments within Liberty Global: Group Reporting, Financial Control and Business Control. We report via Oracle, HFM, via Excel and PowerPoint;
* Responsible for SOX documentation and evidencing performance of financial controls within the LG SOX framework.
* Coach GL accountants - the Senior GL Accountant assigns responsibilities and tasks to the GL Accountants, and monitors the workload and output. In addition the Senior GL Accountant is responsible for training on the job, explaining complex accounting issues and for creating a safe and challenging working environment;
* Manage part of the offshore Financial Accounts team in Bangalore, as Liberty Global has outsourced transactional and standardized tasks to Accenture in Bangalore;
* Process changes and improvements. Liberty Global and therefore the accounting department is constantly changing, which means that processes change as well. The Senior GL Accountant will drive these changes and is always on the lookout for improvements.

* A professional accountancy qualification (ACA/ACCA/CIMA or equivalent) with at least 5 years PQE.

* The drive to be self-motivated, well organised and resilient - ideally with experience of working under pressure in a fast-paced environment!
