Systems and Automation Apprentice

Do you want to be a part of the transformation throughout our business? Join us on our Systems and Automation Apprentice Scheme and you can grow new skills while studying towards a professional qualification!

Be the one driving transformation

You’ll have the opportunity to join us in our System or Automation teams, both responsible for driving efficiency within the business, but doing very different things. Our Systems team are responsible for the transformation of Operational Support Systems (OSS) used by our business. The Automation team is responsible for automating processes to help drive projects forward in a DevOps environment.

Build skills for the future

As a Systems and Automation apprentice, you’ll capture requirements and develop tools to enhance efficiency throughout Virgin Media O2. We work to CICD standards (continuous improvement, continuous development), so there’s always something to work on. You’ll learn new skills in partner management, as well as discover how to build timelines and detailed plans. Tasks you could be responsible for include:

  • Researching, evaluating and developing OSS requirements that come from internal customers and suppliers
  • Providing detailed specifications for proposed solutions including materials, workforce and timelines
  • Delivering and testing new or improved codes with customers
  • Ensuring requirements and updates meet industry standards and practices

What we look for

You’ll be balancing multiple projects at once, so you should be comfortable prioritising and multi-tasking. As your tasks will be tech orientated, you’ll also need to be IT savvy, with an understanding of automation tools. We work in an inclusive, professional and blameless environment, so it’s important that you adopt this and are able to carry our culture throughout your work life. You’ll communicate with people at all levels across our business, so you need to have strong communication skills. Other qualities we’d like to see include:

  • A quick starter
  • Flexible and adaptable
  • Strong presentation skills
  • A passion for self-development

We have opportunities available in our Reading and Slough locations. This role is hybrid, however you will be expected to come into the office when required, as well as be flexible between the two locations.

We’re 100% committed to having a workforce that represents every part of our society, so we’re keen to hear from candidates of all backgrounds and circumstances.

What’s in it for you

A starting salary of £30,000, an opportunity to develop new skills and the chance to work towards a Level 4 DevOps qualification. All our apprenticeships are permanent, so once you successfully complete the scheme, you will have a role in the Systems or Automation team waiting for you, with a landing salary from £40,000. Plus, you can enjoy all our amazing benefits, including:

  • 25 days holiday
  • Your birthday off every year

…and loads more!

What is involved with studying for an apprenticeship?

Your apprenticeship consists of learning on the job, but also gaining the academic skills to put into practice in your day-to-day job. As a result, you’ll complete the apprenticeship as part of a structured learning programme alongside working in the role. The learning programme is made up of a suite of modules and achievements and you’ll be required to evidence your work against these modules via tasks and assignments. For some apprenticeships, you may also undertake additional technical qualifications, which include studying for, and taking an exam. Once you have completed your modules, you’ll then move to your End Point Assessment (EPA) which typically includes an interview and a project. Once you pass this stage, you will receive your apprenticeship qualification with us.
