Are you looking for the perfect apprenticeship, but worried about the impact that coronavirus might have on applying for and securing the right opportunity? Starting an apprenticeship can feel nerve-racking at the best of times, starting a new career during a global pandemic adds even more uncertainty to the mix.
So, how has our application process changed?
The good news is the early part of the process really hasn’t changed very much. We live in a digital world and the technologies we use to process initial applications aren’t affected by the pandemic. It starts off with a simple online application form. This gives you the chance to tell us a little bit about yourself and the Apprenticeship Scheme that you’re interested in.
Following your application, you’ll then complete a situational judgement test (SJT). But not to worry, this is not as daunting as it sounds! An SJT is simply a series of multiple-choice questions that helps us understand how you might respond to real situations and challenges on the Apprenticeship. There’s no time limit here, so find yourself a quiet, comfortable space and take your time.
Swiftly moving on, you’ll be invited to complete a telephone interview. The questions we ask you at this stage are a great opportunity for us to get to know you and your suitability for the apprenticeship role. They’re not trick questions! It just gives us a chance to learn a bit more about your aspirations and motivations.
This is the point where the process becomes more face-to-face in normal times but has been changed over the last year. The biggest change we have made to our application process is our discovery centre. We still want to meet you face-to-face and introduce you to our fun company culture, so we’ve designed a virtual discovery centre that still allows you to do this.
We won’t chuck you straight in the deep end! For a lot of you, this is your first discovery centre let alone virtually, so we want to make sure you’re feeling equipped, confident, and ready to tackle the day head on!
So, let’s prepare! Ahead of the virtual discovery centre, you’ll be invited to a coaching call. This gives us a chance to have a quick one-to-one chat with you to help you prepare for the final stage so that you can really shine at the event. You’ll also be given the chance to check that your technology is working perfectly and ask any questions you may have. Here’s what you can expect from the day, all while meeting what could be future friends and colleagues…
The discovery centre consists of a mixture of exercises, lasting a maximum of 45 minutes each. Our new virtual process is designed for you to safely participate in a group exercise, interview and individual exercise using your own device, in the comfort of your own home.
- The group exercise lets us see how well you work in a team, whether its problem solving or discussing an issue and arriving at a conclusion. The key thing to remember here is communication. Be confident when you make suggestions but always be aware that this is a group activity, so listen carefully to the contributions of others.
- The interview will allow your assessors to speak with you one on one. Have a think about your motivations for applying to your chosen scheme and the value you could bring to Virgin Media.
- The individual exercise helps us gain insight into how you’re likely to perform the day-to-day tasks involved in your chosen role. You’ll be given a brief for this exercise so you can enter your virtual room feeling confident and well-informed. It all boils down to good preparation and practice.
But not everything has changed – you’ll still have regular breaks throughout the day, and there’ll always be someone around if you have any questions.
And the best thing is, you’ll be able to take away feedback from the SJT, telephone interview and discovery centre so you’ve already begun your learning journey learn throughout this process.
