It’s International Women’s Day and we have chosen to change things up. Instead of celebrating for one day, we are going to take the week.

At Virgin Media, we believe that everyone should feel a sense of belonging which is why it’s important to talk about gender equality or in many cases, gender inequality.

This week isn’t just about recognising the amazing achievements of the great women of Virgin Media, but about educating ourselves and others on the importance of building a more inclusive culture.

Whilst equality is the destination, equity is the journey. Equity is about recognising that not all people start from the same position in life. It is about promoting fairness by levelling up all genders where they are at a disadvantage, and it is a mechanism of achieving Gender Equality.

That’s what our Gender Equality network are striving to achieve but we know, the scales are still unbalanced and there’s work to be done.

At present, despite women making up 51% of the UK population, across Virgin Media:

  • Women only make up 27.8% of Virgin Media employees
  • 73% of part-time roles are owned by women
  • 30% of managers are women

To balance the scales, the Gender Equality network is introducing six initiatives:

  1. Breaking the stigma around women’s health taboos and introducing workplace guidelines
  2. Educating our people
  3. Trialling our Women in Leadership development programme
  4. Introducing a gender-neutral hiring process
  5. Listening to our employees on topics of gender equality via workshops
  6. Improving the Return-to-Work experience for new parents

This is just the beginning of our journey.
