Virgin Media Accelerator

Welcome Class of 16 Interns!! I hope you’re all really excited about joining the VM community- there are so many great things you will have the opportunity to get involved with here, so just to get you even more excited I wanted to let you know what a number of us grads got up to last week.

7th July 2016: “Liberty Global presents Virgin Media Accelerator Powered by Techstars Demo Day”- Wowza! What does that even mean?! Back in March Liberty Global invited the CEO’s of 10 tech start-ups from all over the globe to their HQ for a behind the scenes look at how they themselves have enabled a global digital revolution by embracing new technology and unlocking innovation. The following four months were then a test. With support from LG, VM and TS, the start-ups built products, found customers, engaged with mentors and ultimately they designed their plans for the future.

And today was crunch day.

By 1pm St James theatre filled out with members from the 10 tech companies, investors, industry experts, VM executives (Mr Mockridge himself making a star appearance), LG executives, TS executives, and of course 8 of your finest grads. Now for the good stuff! One by one each of the CEO’s took to the stage and pitched their products to what can only be described as an incredibly excited and enthusiastic audience.

We saw virtual reality treadmills, home energy monitoring solutions and an always-on voice communication system just to name a few. Aside from the fact it felt like we had been transported 10 years into the future, it was amazing to see how much hard work and thought had gone into each of the pitches, even down to the critical decision of each of the CEO’s walk on song!

And when the pitches were over the fun didn’t end there. We were then able to test each of the products that had been pitched. Naturally we all made a bolt for the virtual reality treadmill (aka Wizdish) but the demos also proved to be particularly handy, given that one of the business ideas was screen repairs and Joe who had a cracked IPhone screen at the time just had to test that they were able to deliver!

So to sum up, it was a really great day and watching the business pitches was a real eye opener for me as it’s not something you usually get to see in finance (and I’ve not even mentioned the buffet and free bar!) New interns oportunities like this are not uncommon at VM so keep your eyes peeled for things that come up as I cannot recommend enough.

Finally some of you may have seen the magical photo of Joe doing his thing on a Wizdish, but for those of you who didn’t, lets relive it once again!
