Top 5 tips to ace your apprenticeship

February 9, 2022

Applying for an apprenticeship? Apprenticeships are the perfect opportunity to grow as an individual and in your professional career. We’ve got 5 tips that are going to help you get the very best out of your apprenticeship, making sure you grow your skills and experience to the max!

Don’t be afraid to ask questions

Apprenticeships are all about learning. If you’re unsure about something, don’t be afraid to ask questions – we want you to succeed both in your role and in achieving your apprenticeship qualifications. At the end of your apprenticeship, you’ll have to take a final assessment, so you need to make sure you understand every part of your role. To make sure you’re doing the best in your role, you also need to understand all the expectations within your role, and your qualification. You are surrounded by a team of professionals within your apprenticeship, so someone will always be able to give you an answer. Remember, no question is a silly question!

Use your time wisely

As an apprentice, you’re always working towards a bigger goal. To successfully complete your apprenticeship, you need to pass a final assessment. In order to help you achieve this, 20% of your working week is dedicated to studying. You should use this time to keep on top of your work and the apprenticeship if you really want to succeed. You’ll have a learning plan with key milestones to help keep you on top of this.  If you have any spare time day-to-day, you could also use this to learn new skills or get ahead of your apprenticeship. There’s always something to do when you’re on one of our schemes!

Make use of the support system

When you join Virgin Media on an apprenticeship, you’ll be surrounded by others who have been, or are still, in the same situation as you. Everyone will be able to support you in a range of different ways. Whether you’re looking for someone to show you around the office or need some help with a new task you’ve taken on, someone will always be there to help. Our entire workforce is encouraged to speak up and mention any struggles they may be having. As an apprentice, you’re supported by a range of different people, from managers to buddies, you will be learning from others who are there for you.  The Future Careers Community are here for your ongoing support. This is a community led by graduates, interns and apprentices for graduates, interns and apprentices. They provide access and opportunities to socials, development courses, podcasts, business speakers, projects to name a few.

Take every opportunity to network

Entering our business as an apprentice means that you’ll have to learn a variety of new skills quickly. Once you finish your apprenticeship and pass your final assessments, there will be brand new opportunities opening up for you to work onwards and upwards through our business. Throughout the programme, you’ll be exposed to stakeholders, customers, and partners, who will all ask different things of you. Taking every opportunity to network will open doors in your future.

Always say yes!

This is your chance to develop – both personally and professionally! We’ll support your development throughout your time with us so don’t hold yourself back. Saying yes to different opportunities will impress those around you and improve your overall experience of the programme. If you’re open to trying new things, you may find that other employees come to you again with tasks that are potentially more exciting or give you more exposure to those higher up in our business.
