The challenges of working in Telesales

What led you to join Virgin Media?

I’ve done many jobs over the years, mainly in advertising. Many of the companies would be flying high one day, and low the next. There’s been times I’ve not been paid, or the companies were unstable and eventually, I decided I wanted to join a reputable company with a good name.

After doing some research, I settled on Virgin Media and went for it. I did an interview and a role play, conducted by a chap called Andy who would go on to be my manager!

I didn’t come across well in the interview, but I did great in the role play. Initially, I thought I hadn’t got the job, but Andy fought my corner and five days later I got a call telling me I’d got the job. I’ve got a lot to thank him for!

What would you say are the key challenges of a Virgin Media employee in your field?

It’s the same in pretty much any sales job really. There are high expectations and several types of targets, but as long as you’re able to adapt, listen and learn from the people around you, you’ll be fine.

For me personally, I have MS, but like everything in life, you just have to roll with the punches. Everyone’s surprised that I always have a smile, but that’s just how I am, you’ve got to enjoy it. Plus I get free parking; what’s not to love?

What’s the best thing about your job and Virgin Media as a company?

You get a lot of perks working for Virgin media: discounted travel, a great TV package, that kind of thing, but the best thing about my job is the people I get to work with. My team, my boss, the people around me; I couldn’t imagine being in a better team. They treat me completely normally and we have a laugh.

How inclusive do you feel Virgin Media is as an employer?

Virgin have been great and really accommodating for me. I try to tell as many people as I can, “I’m not drunk, I have MS!” We just have a laugh about it.

I really appreciate how fantastic the team has been about it all, I don’t believe I’d still be employed by any other company. And of course, I like to wind people up with my blue badge free parking!
