My switch from teaching into opportunity planning
What did you do prior to joining Virgin Media?
After gaining a degree in Psychology at University, I began my career as a Social Sciences Teacher. After spending a good few years teaching, I was ready for something a bit different. That’s when I came across the job advertised for Virgin Media.
What made you choose Opportunity Planning at Virgin Media?
I’d been looking for opportunities that would enable me to still make a difference to people’s lives, as well as offering me a chance to learn something new. I love to learn and wanted to use the skills I’d honed as a teacher to do something different – I wanted a change.
I remember reading through the ‘must haves’ within the job advert which played to my strengths. It also mentioned a training programme which made me feel confident I’d be able to cultivate my technical knowledge and abilities – so I took a leap of faith and submitted my application.
How did you find the recruitment process?
The recruitment process was straightforward and inclusive, it involved a competency-based interview, an assessment, and a presentation. The interviewers were welcoming which put me at ease straight away. It was clear for me at that point that Virgin Media was a place I felt I wanted to be part of.
Here I am, 5 years later… I’m an established Opportunity Planner working as part of an awesome, hardworking, and diverse team. When I think back to my days as a teacher, I love that I’m able to transfer the skills and qualities I previously developed into a different but rewarding role.
Why do you think the role of Opportunity Planner, is a good match for you?
I’ve always been super attentive and organised; I’m able to build positive relationships quickly, which has been handy because things change at lightning-fast speeds here.
If like me, you’re wanting a change and a new challenge, I’d totally encourage you to give being an Opportunity Planner a shot! Join us on our exciting journey and be a part of something bigger!
