My Placement in Commercial Sales Operations

Jordan Hall

November 10, 2016

Hello. I’m Jordan and I’m one month in on the VMB Business Graduate Programme in Manchester. My first rotation is in the Commercial function, where I work in the Sales Operations team as a Win/Loss Analyst.

The VMB Programme and Sales Operations Team have exceeded all expectations. From day 1 I’ve been thrown in the deep end and given plenty of opportunities to sink my teeth into! By Day 2 of the graduate programme, I was travelling to London to meet with a customer worth over £250K to conduct a win/loss brief. Then by Day 8, I was delivering an internal training course on our commercial deal review process, which within 2 weeks would take me across 5 offices and cover 60 employees. It’s fair to say, it’s been full on and I’ve been kept very busy from the start.

I’ve particularly enjoyed working in a welcoming environment with great people, which makes it very easy to settle in and adjust to life after University (It feels like I’ve been here much longer than a month!). People at Virgin are fun, friendly and always looking for ways to do things differently, something I think makes working in the business stand out from other organisations. There’s also a great graduate and intern community that’s both 1) a social community and 2) a helpful cross-functional business network.

The current big project I’m starting is a channel optimisation programme, where I’ll be looking to close information gaps and enhance the performance of our partner business. This again shows and I’d like to reiterate: VMB graduates are given real responsibilities from day 1, which are both challenging and interesting.

Overall, my first 4 weeks as a VMB graduate have been a fantastic experience, where I’ve developed both professionally and personally. I’m working on real projects with real responsibilities and looking forward to my remaining time in the Commercial function as well as my future rotations.
