We talk to one of our awesome Opportunity Planners here at Virgin Media. Georgina has been working for Virgin Media for over 5 years and is a mum of two so can properly dish the dirt on what life is like here when it comes to flexibility and work-life balance.
How did you come across the job at Virgin Media?
I remember visiting my family in Wales and was flicking through jobs when I saw the advert for Virgin Media as a part time Customer Order Entry Administrator in the Sheffield office.
I was looking for a place where I’d feel valued and secure and the culture and benefits at Virgin Media looked great!
I was in Cardiff when I heard from Virgin Media offering me an interview and I was employed within two weeks of that call. That’s where my journey with Virgin Media began.
So, when did you become an Opportunity Planner?
I loved working as a Customer Order Entry Administrator but began to feel I’d achieved the goals I’d set for myself. I was one of the top performers in my team and was regularly asked to fill in for my manager. The only obvious progression step was for me to move into management, but that didn’t feel right for me.
I saw the role of Opportunity Planner advertised and it got me excited! The role was full time, so I was a bit hesitant to go for it at first. It looked like the challenge I’d been seeking for quite some time and was also a gentle reminder of my capabilities and skills that I’d learnt during my time at Cadburys where I’d worked prior to Virgin Media. I weighed it all up. By then, my children where a bit older and I felt it was the right time, so I applied.
Here I am 4 years later!
How did you find the transition from part time to full time?
The transition from part time to working full time was lots easier than I anticipated (especially since we switched to working from home).
It’s great, I’ve found a job that allows me to be a mum, have a career and even better than that, I was able to stay with Virgin Media, meaning that I got to keep all the same benefits and perks that you get working here.
Don’t get me wrong, there’s a lot to manage. I work a full day, and both my son and daughter have extremely busy lives outside of school. That’s on top of me keeping the house in check and the fridge stocked up!
My daughter’s in the GB climbing squad which means that on top of a vigorous training schedule, she has several national and international events she needs me to take her to. My son also has several activities he loves to do whether that’s go karting, rugby or trips to London (the list is endless).
‘I’m trusted to take time out or adjust my working hours to suit my individual needs’
My job in Opportunity Planning at Virgin Media allows me the flexibility to do all of that and still have time for me. What more can you ask for?
