Radio Optimisation Engineer Fiona Stewart shares with us for International Women in Engineering Day the skills she’s still growing and the important ways she’s innovating to help set her industry up for success.
At Virgin Media…
I optimise the Radio Access Network from the User’s mobile to the Base Station. This ensures that the quality of service is at the best performance by managing capacity and interference.
Before working in Engineering
I graduated with a modern apprenticeship in Telecommunications. I still love to learn and I’m continuing to learn skills in 2G, 3G, 4G, 5G Radio Access Technologies, and Cisco certification. I am currently doing an Open University degree in Data Science, as well.

My advice to aspiring engineers
- Establish connections with like-minded people so you can learn and grow.
- Take time out to reflect (something I was not so good at) and strongly recommend it.
I’m innovating by
Working with the Network Insights Team, recommending useful tools that could help analyse the network from crowdsource measurements.
