International Women in Engineering Day: Meet Ellie

Ellie Betteridge

Technical Sites Build Engineer

June 24, 2022

This International Women in Engineering Day, we’re introducing you to some of the fab women who make sure our networks are running smoothly for our customers. Take a look at what Ellie Betteridge gets up to below.

At Virgin Media…

I’m a Technical Sites Build Engineer. This means I successfully build, install, maintain, upgrade and repair network systems within the headend (a cable centre where several signals come together and are monitored before pinging off to our network), I also look after our hub environment, ensuring tasks are carried out and reliable, high-quality service is provided across all platforms and to our customers.

Before working in Engineering

I studied Sports Science at Loughborough University and worked in lots of different roles including, a lifeguard, postwoman and security guard.

Ask me about

  • Virgin Media’s network architecture
  • Where broadband comes from and how it gets to your TV through Fibre and Coax.
  • Transmitters and Receivers, how they work and their importance in Virgin Media’s Network.

My advice to aspiring engineers

  • Find yourself a mentor in engineering who has reached a level you would like to achieve.
  • Ask lots of questions because no question is a silly one.
  • Ask to cross-train with different departments so you can experience and understand the full business.

I’m innovating by

Breaking barriers when it comes to Headends. My team and I challenged the rack layouts in the Headends. The rack build was not efficient nor accessible to work in. We broke barriers and redesigned the rack. This is now being pushed to be implemented in other regions.
