How a curiosity for sales kickstarted my career

How did you know a career in Field Sales was for you?

Since a teenager I’ve managed to wrangle my way into several sales jobs. From selling football programmes, so I can watch a match to selling flowers outside my parents flat so I could have some extra pocket money when my mum took me to watch the Blackpool light illuminations. I’ve always had a curiosity for finding an opportunity. A young entrepreneur if you will. It’s what encouraged me to go for my butchers job.

That was a great opportunity because I loved meeting different types of people and I learnt how to successfully negotiate when it came to sales. It prepared me for my Field Sales role with Virgin Media 25 years ago.

Wow. How has Field Sales changed from when you started to now?

At the core, nothing has changed. Being in Field Sales is all about knocking on doors, building a rapport with potential customers and selling them products that will help better their lives. That hasn’t changed one bit. Now though, we’re known as leaders in the business, which is a big difference than when I was selling back in the day as it was smaller franchise cable companies. Today, we have tons of products to sell other than TV and telephone and people are curious to know about them.

What can people expect in this type of role?

You’ll get out of this job what you put into it. There’s a lot of trust and freedom in Field Sales. Even though we report into managers, you get to be your own boss. You can find hours of working that makes sense for you and if you need a bit of extra money with uncapped commission, the hours are yours for the taking.

Every door won’t result in a sale but it’s about shrugging it off and onto the next because for every no, there’s a yes. It comes down to getting to know the people you’re talking to. Being patient and treating them how you would like to be treated.

You get to meet potential customers every day. How often do you get to meet other employees?

Obviously I’ve been with the business for a while so over the years I’ve managed to meet loads of people. A lot of the times, you’re meeting people across the business when you need to find out extra information about a product. That’s usually the best way to build connections.

Before the pandemic, we used to have lots of in-person events and I’m really looking forward to that picking up again because I’ve made some life-long friendships that way. The pay on this job allows me to go on some amazing holidays and I’ve been able to do that with some of my colleagues who even know my family now. It’s been one of the best parts of working in Field Sales.

What’s one word you would use to describe working in Field Sales?

Opportunity. There’s so much you can get out of working in Field Sales at Virgin Media. From the benefits such as Bupa healthcare, which has helped my family massively, to meeting new people and discovering other areas in the company that you want to explore. There really is something for everyone here and there’s room for growth and new experiences.
