From the army into the field

What made you apply to work at Virgin Media?

I was actually having Virgin Media installed at my own home and got talking to the installer. I was going through resettlement at the time, and through our conversation I found out that he was also ex-military. He told me about the role and I liked the sound of having a permanent job without having to work on contract, so I applied shortly afterwards.

How have you found the transition from the military to a civilian workplace?

It hasn’t been bad but it’s definitely been different. I left the Army so that I could spend more time with my family, but it takes some time to get used to being back home again, especially having been abroad for so long.

In terms of the work, working here is a lot more independent, but it’s also important to work as a team. While you’re often working as an individual in this role, the team ethic I learned in the Army has definitely helped. I was fortunate enough to have a really engaged team and we helped each other out during training.

What are the key qualities needed of someone in your field?

You need to be a good listener for a start. Being able to explain things to both customers and team members is really important. As a Coach, it’s important to be able to pick up on things and understand what your colleague already knows in order to improve their skills. It’s not just about pointing out what’s wrong, it’s about building on what’s already there.

What’s your favourite part of the job?

My favourite part is having the opportunity to improve and help your colleagues to progress to the next level. It’s good to know that people find you approachable, that they feel they can confide in you.

What advice would you give someone interested in working at Virgin Media?

Make sure you read the job description thoroughly first. Make sure you’re comfortable working on your own. Can you own a situation and handle it? Remember, you’re not just installing a cable, you’re interacting and engaging with customers. It’s important to keep the customer service aspect in mind.

What are your thoughts on Virgin Media as an employer?

It’s great for progression and job security. I’ve been lucky to have moved in my role, but there have always been opportunities. You don’t have to stay in one place here. There are clear paths to progression and opportunities to explore other avenues.
