Changing careers can be daunting. Luckily, at Virgin Media O2 it doesn’t have to be. Take it from Riddhi Gorania, who started her career as a dentist and worked in a hospital at the start of the pandemic.
Fast forward to today, and she’s knees-deep helping to write our Data Privacy guides as a graduate on our Digital Graduate Scheme. She shares her journey from dentistry to data, what inspired her to take the leap – and her advice to anyone else who’s ever wondered whether they’re in the right job.
It always surprises people to discover that I was a dentist in my previous, working life! My favourite subject in school was maths, but I decided not to study it at university because I thought I would end up a teacher. Luckily, there’s more support to help women pursue STEM careers now.
A few years after graduating, I found myself working as a Dental Core Trainee in the Oral and Maxillofacial (head and neck) surgery department of a teaching hospital at the start of the pandemic. Here, I experienced first-hand the pressure that junior doctors are under. One weekend while working on-call, I ran around the hospital so much that I did 20,000 steps.
Even though I was sometimes pushed to my limits emotionally as a dentist, I wasn’t being challenged academically and I missed exercising my brain and solving difficult equations.
I wanted to change careers, but I didn’t want to have to completely retrain at university. The Virgin Media O2 Grad Scheme was a perfect fit because it allowed me to continue to work, while allowing me to explore different fields and decide which direction to take my career in next.
I applied for the Digital scheme because it wasn’t as predictable as some of the other rotations. I liked that it was a more disruptive environment, where I could really push myself, learn and develop new ideas. Being able to harness data and take insights from it, is what is going to set companies apart from their competition. So, I leapt at the opportunity.
I’m so glad that I applied, and I’m also grateful to those who recognised that my potential extends far beyond my credentials on paper.
I’ve been getting up to speed with GDPR and Data Privacy. I’ve also been writing user guides for One Trust, our new Privacy Platform, and learning how to use the software. It’s a good mix of performing tasks, and learning in a safe environment where you can have a go, and get feedback. I really enjoy this way of learning. Theory will only take you so far – I like to practice by doing.
The fulfillment from the work I’m doing and being part of a great team is what I enjoy the most. Everyone has been so welcoming. I have the freedom to grow at Virgin Media O2, and it’s such an inclusive culture. I don’t have a technical background, or a background in privacy – but a growth mindset and willingness to learn are all really valued here.
If you ever feel like you’re stuck in your career – or that there are no other options for you: it’s simply not true. There are so many opportunities out there. I’d encourage you to explore them and be open-minded and willing to take the leap. Being happy in your career is the most important thing.
