In order for your team to really thrive, you need to give them the chance to shine. Which means finding ways to empower each and every team member. Don’t keep hold of the reins too much, because you will be holding your team back from reaching their full potential. Sometimes you have to have a little faith, and give your staff the responsibility they are craving.

Arm them with the weapons they need to take things to the next level. The best kinds of managers empower their team rather than watch over everything they do. We’d recommend channelling Richard Branson rather than David Brent or Dave Harken (a.k.a Kevin Spacey) from Horrible Bosses.

Three-out-of-four employees report their boss is the worst and most stressful part of their job. Rather than piling on the pressure and stressing out your poor team, give them the tools, support and training they need to be absolute rockstars.

Avoid micromanaging – give your team responsibility

In the world of management, micro-managing is a huge no no, except maybe in special circumstances, when it’s needed to get the job done i.e. you’ve got an extremely important task that needs to be done perfectly.

It’s not cool when your manager can’t even let you get on with the simplest of tasks without butting their nose in. It’s suffocating and restricting. If you want your team to feel empowered, when appropriate, take a step back, and give them a chance to excel at a task without your input. By having more responsibility, they can then take ownership of their successes and will get more job satisfaction.

Communicate your vision

Your loyal team isn’t going to feel empowered if they don’t understand what you want to achieve. Make sure you tell them what success looks like, and how you see the team developing. Set clear team and individual goals so that everyone feels motivated to achieve.

Encourage training and learning

Each and every ambitious employee values the chance to take part in training and development. Help further everyone’s career, improve your team’s skillset and stay up to date with the latest trends and techniques by offering regular training. Which can include things like training courses, seminars, conferences or industry events.

Facilitate prompt feedback and recognise outstanding work

In order for everyone to keep progressing in the right direction, consistent feedback is needed. Find ways to provide useful feedback to your team, so that they can grab it with both hands and use it to up their game.

There’s a whole load of smart apps that can help you to give feedback, no matter where your staff are or what they’re doing. Provide your staff with all the information they need to get the job done and keep moving forwards.

If there’s a bottleneck, your team will quickly become frustrated and stuck rather than motivated and empowered. And remember, as well as giving feedback yourself, you should also listen to what your team members have to say and take their comments on board, so that they feel valued.

It’s also important to give credit where credit is due, and offer rewards to team members who go the extra mile. Offer rewards for hard work, such as giving more responsibility to those who excel on particular tasks or work perks such as the chance to work from home, or even monetary rewards.

Be flexible

If your management style is too rigid, staff may feel as though they are being held back rather than driven forwards. Take a look at your processes, workflow and team performance, and see if there are any areas that could benefit from a bit more fluidity. Like delegating tasks that you no longer need to complete yourself, allowing staff to work in a manner that suits their learning style, and generally being open to new ideas and ways of doing things.
