Being a woman in Direct Sales

How has your career led you to where you are now?

I’ve been working in sales since I was 18, starting with door-to-door charity sign-up on one-hundred percent commission structure. That was good for teaching me resilience and work ethic, and really makes you understand that you have to work for what you earn.

Then I went into estate agency; that was more sales, more commission. However, the earning potential just wasn’t there. I then switched back to charity as the money was better, but then someone mentioned Virgin Media and how they paid a basic salary plus commission. That was unheard of for me! So, I went for it and I’ve been here ever since.

What would you say are the key challenges of a Virgin Media employee in your field?

The weather can be a big one! It can be unpredictable when you’re working outside, both positive and negative. For example, it’s not nice to have to walk around in the rain, but it means people are more likely to be home and you’re more likely to hit your targets. I like the challenge and having that motivation.

What’s the best thing about your job?

I like that no two days are ever the same. You get to speak to a wide range of people, you get to go to a lot of different places and it keeps you fresh. Not many jobs are like that.

Virgin Media are great to work for, they really look after you. Not only are the pay and benefits good, they’re also very supportive and provide excellent training. They really make sure you’re prepared before you go out there. They won’t throw you in at the deep end.

What’s the most memorable (in a positive way!) work related incident you’ve had at Virgin Media?

There’s a few really. The part I enjoy most is knowing that I saved people money or given them a better service, and I get to do that every day. I’ve had a lot of customers refer me to family and friends, so it’s nice to know you’re appreciated.

Also, when I saw my first pay cheque. I couldn’t believe the earning potential. It makes the daily challenge worth it.
