An insight into the virtual recruitment process

If you’re applying for one of our apprenticeships, this insight into the virtual recruitment process will help you prepare and calm any nerves you might have. Our entire process is virtual, from the application form to the final assessment. But don’t worry, it doesn’t mean we won’t get to ‘meet’ you along the way!  There’s a number of stages to the process, as well as reasons we’ve decided to stay virtual in 2022.   

 

Why is our recruitment process still virtual? 

The main reason we’ve kept our recruitment process online is due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Our business is constantly growing, which means bringing in talent is essential, even through the pandemic. Being online is the safest way to meet candidates and interview them as we usually do. We recruit all over England, but we don’t usually run our Discovery Centres all over England. By doing this online, there’s no need to travel, you can do it from the comfort of your own home! All in all, it keeps the application simple. 

 

Step 1 – Application Form 

The first step of our virtual recruitment process is a simple application form. This gives you the chance to tell us a bit about yourself and the scheme you’re interested in. We don’t need a CV or cover letter for this stage as we prefer to hear it from you directly! 

 

Step 2 – Situational Judgement Test 

Once you’ve completed the application form, you’ll be asked to take a Situational Judgement Test, or SJT for short. This sounds a lot scarier than it really is. An SJT is a different form of psychometric testing, which allows us to make sure you’re right for the role. It also gives you the chance to experience what a day on the programme would look like so that you can decide if it’s right for you. You’ll be given several situations, set within video clips, and asked to rate responses based on the best and worst way to deal with the problem. 

If you’re still nervous about this stage, we’ve got you covered! We have created a practice SJT to give you an idea of how it works. 

 

Step 3 – Telephone Interview 

We’ll let you know pretty soon if you’ve passed the SJT or not. If you do, you’ll move on to the telephone interview. This is a quick chat with our recruitment team to talk through the role you’ve applied for. They’ll give you the chance to tell us more about you, your aspirations and what motivates you. In this same call, they’ll discuss whether or not the role is suitable for you, and if there might be something else more suited toward your interests. 

 

Step 4 – Coaching Call 

This is our chance to catch up before the big day! You’ll receive a call from our recruitment team, who will help you prepare for the final step of our virtual recruitment process. If you have any questions, worries, or just need a few tips, this is your chance to mention them! This stage isn’t something you’re rated on, it’s just to make sure you’re ready. 

 

Step 5 – Virtual Discovery Centre 

The final stage, and most important, is the virtual discovery centre. We hold this on Microsoft Teams. Our Future Careers team will kick the session off with a big welcome from us. You’ll be introduced to the team you’ll spend the day with virtually, as well as the candidates you could be working alongside. This gives us the chance to get to know each of you, as well as keeping the social aspect that makes these days so exciting. Our team will continue by sharing what the apprenticeship standard consists of for the scheme you’ve applied for, and the business areas they’re based in. You’ll get an insight into the benefits of joining Virgin Media, as well as a deep understanding of our values and strategies. 

Once we’ve completed the welcome session, we’ll move on to the interactive tasks. Each candidate will need to complete these sessions, allowing us to assess you on different competencies throughout. Each session is based on the scheme you’ve applied for, which means they’re different for each programme. At the end of the discovery centre, we’ll round up with a big thanks and update you on the process moving forwards. We won’t keep you waiting long for feedback – in fact we usually get back to you within a few days. 

 

Our virtual recruitment process means that candidates get feedback at all stages, and we can keep recruiting talent.
