At Virgin Media, we want everyone regardless of their gender identity to feel they are included and have a greater sense of belong-ing. Did you know transgender hate crimes have rise by 81% in the UK – shocking right?
Today is Trans Day of Remembrance where vigils are held across the world to remember those who have lost their lives as a result of hate crime.
By being an ally and using more inclusive language as part of Everyday Inclusion, you can make a difference to the lives of trans people, helping to build a safer, more accepting society.
Here are 5 ways you can support trans people:
- When you meet someone for the first time don’t make assumptions about someone’s gender identity just by how they look
- Use generic pronouns of ‘them’, ‘they’, ‘their’ until you know how someone wants you to refer to them. Avoid ‘ladies’, ‘gentleman’, ‘gents’, ‘girls’, ‘boys’ and ‘guys’ to address groups of people. Instead use ‘folks’, ‘teammates’ or ‘peeps’
- Don’t make assumptions on someone’s sexuality just because of their gender identity. The two are very different and one does not define the other. Sexuality is who you are romantically, sexually or spiritually connected to and gender identity is the personal sense of one’s own gender
- Where you can, state your preferred pronouns and go one step further and put them on your email signature. This is a simple way to let trans people know you are being supportive and let’s everyone else know how you identify. E.g. She/her/hers they/them/theirs
- Never underestimate the difference it will make to speak up for someone if you hear anti-transgender remarks, jokes and conversations. Here at Virgin Media, we do not tolerate discriminatory behaviour.
We know it’s important to support transgender colleagues to feel more at home, so where we get the opportunity we are making changes to the way we do things at Virgin Media to support our people, such as introducing gender neutral toilets in our new home at Brook Drive, Reading.
