Ever wondered what to expect when it comes to being a data & analytics graduate with us? We got the opportunity to chat with Georgia Banks, who is now an Associate Data Product Manager. Georgia outlines why being brave is key to achieving your own personal success and how she’s carved out new opportunities for herself at Virgin Media O2.

Be agile

Things are always transforming in the digital world. It’s important to be open to reimagining what your role can look like. I started out at the beginning of my graduate scheme in the analytics team and by my second year, I was working in the data products team. I discovered this was something I enjoyed.

Expand your mind

When I started the team was around 60 people. Now we have 200 and counting. Even though we have smaller teams made up within this, it’s amazing how much we interconnect due to the products we’re working on. Take this as an opportunity and let your mind expand. We all inspire and learn from each other as a team, and it’s been a successful way to grow.

Let your interests guide you

Doing the graduate scheme allowed me to recognise what skills I leaned into. For example, two other graduates I was working with enjoyed the more technical aspects such as coding. Even though I’ve developed technical skills, I knew it wasn’t what I wanted to spend my day-to-day doing. Instead, I realised I was drawn to the product management side. Partly due to the point above, which is getting to collaborate with a lot more teams within our department. What’s great is that even though I’m not the person writing code every day, I can still engage in technical conversations in meetings.

Be brave

It can be daunting to take ownership of certain things when you feel like you’re getting started. However, what drew me to this role was the ability to work with stakeholders to create a product vision/roadmap and then own that. Being able to build a product from scratch with total autonomy, gathering ideas on how to scale up, and taking advice from expert data analysts has been phenomenal.

The agility of our data teams gives us the space to be adaptable. I love being able to bridge the gap between highly technical people (data scientists, analytics engineers) and commercial stakeholders and learn from both sides.

Get stuck in

Something that’s become an important part of my time at Virgin Media O2 is working on the team engagement area within my department. I get to uncover new ways our teams can become closer and new members can feel supported. Currently, I’m working on an event for the wider data team. I love how this allows me to tap into the people element and culture at the company and I’m also supported by my manager, Chanade Hemming.
