We caught up with our Data Analyst Apprentice, Brett Parker, who shared with us his experience so far as an apprentice within Virgin Media Business.

Why did you choose an apprenticeship with Virgin Media?

I come from a largely academic background and studied neuroscience at university but wanted to diverge more into Data Analysis and Data Science due to the great overlap with current advancements in data analysis. I had little to no technical skills and therefore was looking for a position whereby they provide full training and push someone like myself with little to no technical skills to an advanced level in a short period of time.

The apprenticeship scheme at Virgin Media Business (VMB) has that perfect balance between on work training and academic training at university, which together marries very well and gives you the confidence early on to work effectively within your team and give to ideas for improvements on the business. Obviously, another great advantage is being part of the wider Virgin group allows for a wealth of opportunities. With Liberty Global having a presence all over the world, the opportunity to travel is something that really attracted me to the role.

What’s the best thing about being a Virgin Media apprentice?

The best thing about being a Data Analyst Apprentice in VMB is that you are allowed and encouraged from the very beginning to make decisions within the company. You aren’t treated as a student or a junior as you may expect but as an equal member of the team where your opinion is appreciated. Also, it really feels like people care about your progression and are happy to support with arranging extra training or arranging meetings if you have doubts in certain areas or just need that extra help. In my particular role, we have exposure to many people across the organisation; this is extremely useful as you build those all-important relationships quickly and you learn from their experiences. You also learn and understand the daily running of the business through those relationships.

For my role, there is a clear progression plan set out by my manager and we have regular 1-2-1 meetings to see how I am doing and if I am meeting those goals.
