10 minutes with Kunal Shah
Hi Kunal, thank you for taking the time to talk to me today! So, you’re a Regional Sales Manager for Virgin Venue. How long have you worked here at Virgin Media?
I have worked for Virgin Media in total for seven years now. I started off as a Sales Agent, which I did for three years, and then I was promoted to Regional Sales Manager which I have been doing for four years.
Wow, so you have worked your way up! What’s made you stay with the business for so long?
I’ve always enjoyed working in sales and Virgin Media is a business that looks after their people. When I first joined, I took a pay cut to be here because I could see the bigger picture and the potential career opportunities!
My aim when I made that decision was to progress and develop my skills. When I began my career here as a Sales Agent, the potential commission opportunities excited me because effectively, I was able to write my own pay cheque.
However, my longer-term vision has always been to progress but I needed to be realistic and work my way through the channel to gain experience and knowledge. Since making this decision, I have never looked back.
Virgin Media have always taken care of me. This is the longest job I’ve ever had!
I’m really glad to hear that you feel appreciated in your role! What made you choose to work in Virgin Venue?
I knew how Virgin Venue worked. It’s the area I know and I have never looked elsewhere, even for career progression. I like to work in an area I know so well.
My thoughts are if you don’t know your area, how can you teach it to someone else? For me, this is crucial, especially because of where I see myself in the future and for my role now.
That’s such a nice way of looking at things. Tell me what your career has been like so far? What’s been your highlight moment?
Well, I’m not sure if you have heard of something we do in sales called The Edge?
I have, but could you explain it further for me?
Okay! The Edge is an incentive you can win based on your performance. It’s really exciting; as you don’t win small prizes you win trips abroad. I won a trip to Las Vegas!
That was a period of my life where I felt I had to prove myself to get to where I wanted to be. And by winning The Edge as a top performer, it made me realise that I could do my job and I was successful at it.
Then in my third year with Virgin Media, I put a lot of time and effort in outside of my day-to-day work to prove myself to the business that I had the capability to be a Regional Manager. It worked, and I got promoted.
That’s awesome that you won! What a great way to celebrate your hard work. With all that in mind and seven years of experience behind you, what three words would you use to describe Virgin Media?

What advice would you give to someone interested in working for Virgin Media, more specifically Virgin Venue?
Treat the job in Virgin Venue as if you’re self-employed, what you put in you get out. Yes, you get the backdrop and support of Virgin Media and you’re given the resources to be the best. However, to earn great money and to be successful you need to put the work in.
You can’t work in Virgin Venue for the basic salary! You have to want more, and you have to have the drive to go out and get it.
What’s the best thing about working for the business?
For me, it’s the satisfaction of hitting the target. Of course, there are up’s and downs, but when you have a target to focus on and you hit it or exceed it – there is no better feeling!
That ego boost is incredible and really pushes you to be the best. Then when you receive the commission on top of that, you will want it even more.
You mentioned that Sales is the area for you, but if you could trade jobs with someone in the business for one day who would it be and why?
I think I would trade jobs with someone in the Proposition team. I think because of the nature of my role, I hear so much about what our customers and the public in general want, that I feel I could be a real asset.
The Proposition team look at the financial aspects of our business and what KPIs we need to hit. But not necessary with the insight that the teams in sales have. We know what our customers want – we should be sharing it.

What do you do to help our customers?
In the field, I try and help customers with their questions and queries. If I can’t help I will direct them. I am honest and open and try to be the best I can be to provide them with the experience they deserve.
The reason I do that is because you have to build a relationship before you can get someone to join you or recommend someone to what you’re offering! That rapport is everything.
