Completing my People Graduate Scheme in Amsterdam

I’ve just finished the People Graduate scheme and my last placement was certainly a memorable one! I had the fantastic opportunity of hopping over the water to Amsterdam for six months to work with our parent company Liberty Global.

For a bit of context, the People Graduate scheme runs for 3 years, where you rotate on 6 month placements across the HR function. In my time I’ve worked in HR Projects, Business Partnering roles and Reward. It’s a great chance to try out different roles but also build up a variety skills as each role is so different.

I started my placement back in March with little knowledge about the Netherlands and wondering what this new role was going to take! Now, the first impression that anyone has of the LG offices in Amsterdam is how great the facilities and environment is – the on-site restaurant definitely makes lunch time a treat! It’s a large site of around 1,000 employees with a variety of working environments as they are currently implementing an agile working environment.

In regards to the work I got involved in, I was there to identify and implement changes into their People Operations team. I had little experience in this area but I was given the support and autonomy to understand they key areas I could work on and the changes this could make. It was this level of responsibility that really motivated me to make as big a difference as I could and I’m pleased that we have seen tangible improvements in the team. I was also able to get involved in other projects at the time so it was great to understand the different teams across the function as well.

I was definitely apprehensive before making the move. It was an unknown country and somewhat and unknown new place of work but having done it, I would recommend it to anyone. It isn’t always easy but the skills and experience I gained made it one of the best things for me.

It also shows how great a graduate scheme at VM can be – whilst VM itself is UK based, opportunities to work abroad are now becoming more common.

If this has got you thinking that VM may be a place for you then our applications for the 2018 Graduate Schemes are now open!
