Completing the VMB Graduate Scheme

We spent some time talking to Helen, who recently completed the VMB graduate programme and landed her permanent role within VMB. Here’s what she had to say about her graduate journey.

Telecoms was not an industry that sprung to mind when searching for my graduate career, but when you think about it, our generation absolutely relies on the internet, whether on a desktop or phone! Put together with the Virgin values, it seemed like the best idea to apply! The application process was efficient, but most of all, fun and friendly. So when I received the call to offer the role, I was absolutely thrilled.

I have now been working for Virgin Media Business for two years, and it’s fair to say, there is a whole world of technology out there that I never knew existed! The beauty of the scheme means you’re moving around the business every 6 months: you get to get down in the depths of projects but also get a great overview of the end to end of the business. In the B2B world, there is a wide variety of channels that we have to consider, from our small office customers right through to our enterprise and public sector accounts. The best thing too is that you don’t need a technical mind to be successful here; there is something for everyone!

My journey through the scheme has been fairly logical – I started in product, getting to grips with the basics of what we do and how we develop new things before moving to the commercial world, learning how we make money from it. I completed my 3rd placement in Project Lightning, the largest UK fibre network roll-out, where I was responsible for developing new processes to ensure sale to install was well-organised. Taking the learnings from this, I landed my final placement in the customer experience team, looking specifically at our internal processes and what our customers are telling us to make large scale changes to the way the business operates. Rolling off the scheme, I have continued in a similar role as a senior customer experience manager, focusing specifically on how we help our customers during the product lifecycle. To be good at what I do, I have to build quick rapport and strong relationships to bring the key stakeholders along with me, to make a true difference to our customers.

During my graduate career, I have been fortunate enough to become the president of the graduate committee, leading a team of 8 peers to put on a years’ worth of learning events, social activities and generally build a community outside of our normal working lives. Not only has this been a great part of my development, it has been fun to work with such a great bunch!

If you’re keen to work with some great people, take responsibility for high-profile projects and have a laugh at the same time, then I can highly recommend this graduate scheme!
