Hi there, my name is Simon Price and I’m an access planning apprentice and I have been working for Virgin Media for 15 months.

I came into this role after finishing university doing sport and exercise psychology and left my job in the leisure industry. There were many reasons as to why I chose an apprenticeship; such as the opportunity to learn new skills and develop whilst also earning at the same time, however one of the main factors which influenced my decision to apply to Virgin Media was the fact that apprenticeships are a good gateway into such a major company and reading up on the role and schemes I thought this would be a good way to experience new things and pursue a career rather than just getting a job.

Whilst I did have high expectations of what to expect, Virgin Media has definitely surpassed this; throughout my apprenticeship I’ve had many great opportunities from carrying out school and college talks; going to trade and skill shows; to meeting politicians, CEO’s and representing Virgin Media apprentices at the Houses of Parliament, which has definitely been a highlight of mine!

On a day to day basis, my role involves planning the fibre network for the West Midlands, surveying customer sites and creating job packs for engineers and contractors to carry out the works I have proposed. I also update the local records, carry out job costings and deal with any issues that may arise while the work is being carried out.

Though my role is based on surveying and planning; in the background I am also pursuing a professional qualification which is based in telecommunications.
