Who are our Field Technicians?
They’re the people who dazzle our customers every day, by visiting them in their homes, installing or fixing their products and providing them with a friendly, knowledgeable service following every visit. Our Field Technicians also provide services to small business customers including shops, offices and homeworkers.

Let’s talk about what you’ll be doing…
Do you have a driving licence? Good, because you’re going to need it! You’ll spend your days driving across the region, connecting customers to everything that matters to them and offering them expert tips and advice. You will be required to support the growth of our business through the Tech Lead Referral scheme. It’s a fantastic opportunity for field based Technicians to engage with our customers whilst installing a service or fixing a fault and influencing them to refer Friends & Family through advocacy. The scheme is great for engagement, positive feedback from customers and the acquisition of new customers whilst earning yourself £50, so everyone’s a winner!

…and what you’re going to learn…
This apprenticeship teaches you everything you need to know about installing and repairing our phone, TV and broadband products. This includes learning how to:

  • Run cables
  • Measure and adjust signal levels
  • Make and change connections
  • Configure state-of-the-art equipment
  • Give customers the lowdown on how their services work

How are you going to get there?
The role suits tech savvy, hands on people who enjoy solving problems . You must also be comfortable working at heights in order to tackle those hard-to-reach cables! As well as having a full driving licence with no more than 3 points, you’ll need to be prepared to work shifts including weekends, although not to worry as we’ll provide your shift patterns 12 months’ in advance, so no nasty surprises!  You also need to be someone who is friendly and flexible and who can act as a great ambassador for our brand. During the scheme you’ll get to add lots more skills to your locker, along with the experience and understanding you need to move onwards and upwards through our company. Plus you’ll enjoy a great salary and amazing benefits from day one!

Apprenticeship: Level 2 Telecoms Field Operative
Duration: 15 months
Locations available: Nationwide (please check your area for current vacancies)
Requirements: It would be highly desirable that you already hold Maths and English GSCEs or equivalent (Grade 2 or above). Full UK driving licence with no more than 3 points.
Salary: £17,000 (additional £2,500 London Weighting Allowance for eligible locations) + salary progression and amazing benefits

Who are our Planners?

They’re the people responsible for planning the works and new build projects that help us to continue expanding our network. While the role is quite technical in nature, it also involves having financial accountability and managing relationships with clients.

Let’s talk about what you’ll be doing…

As an apprentice Planner, you’ll get involved a wide range of planning and design activities across our fibre, telephony, data, DTV and broadband access network.

…and what you’re going to learn…

Over the course of the scheme, you will develop a detailed understanding of our cutting-edge technology, including all the elements of our network infrastructure (fibre, HFC, copper etc.). You will also gain experience of various project management techniques including planning, resource allocation, prioritisation and evaluation.

How are you going to get there?

We’re looking for people who are passionate about building a career in telecommunications and who can work effectively as part of a larger team. Managing customers is a big part of the role. So it’s also important that you’re a great communicator who will be confident representing Virgin Media in front of all kinds of people. By the end of the apprenticeship, your scheme mentor and workmates will have helped you add lots more capabilities to your locker, along with the experience and understanding you need to kickstart a successful career. Who are our Network Engineers?
They’re the technical experts who design, build and take care of the physical network of cabling and cabinets that carry our services from technical sites to customers’ homes. They play a crucial role in helping us get the most out of our network, which is the largest in the UK and Europe.

Let’s talk about what you’ll be doing…
We offer two different opportunities for apprentice Network Engineers. One is field-based and focuses on building the network. The other is office-based and focuses on designing the network.

  • As a field-based Network Engineer, you’ll be working at various technical sites, helping to build and upgrade our network for services including ultrafast broadband and advanced digital TV products. Through your apprenticeship, you’ll be able to develop a broad range of technical skills while learning how to manage contractors and deliver a high standard of customer care.
  • As an office-based Network Engineer, you’ll be working within our Network Engineering team, helping to define architectural & engineering strategies and underlying roadmaps. It’s an opportunity to gain exposure to many different areas of our technology estate, from data, internet, voice and video to cloud infrastructure services.

We’re looking for people who are good at managing relationships and have the confidence to challenge the status quo – and if you also have some knowledge of networks and relevant technologies, even better. Being a Solutions Design Engineer Apprentice puts you right in the heart of our wholesale business, where you’ll help develop technical solutions that meet the needs of target customers. Day to day, this will involve engaging with lots of different people, including customers, sales engineering professionals and members of our technical and commercial teams.

…and what you’re going to learn…

Solutions Design Engineers need to be able to understand and present complex solutions to technical and non-technical audiences. So there will be lots of opportunities for you to develop your communication and customer-facing skills. You will also develop knowledge and experience in a wide range of technical areas including:

  • Optical and Ethernet networking
  • Data (L1/L2/L3) technologies
  • Information Security

How are you going to get there?

We’re looking for logical and creative problem-solvers who are enthusiastic about learning and have a positive, practical approach to work – and if you also have knowledge of telecommunications, network infrastructure and network hardware, even better. By the end of the apprenticeship, your scheme mentor and workmates will have helped you add lots more skills to your locker, along with the experience and understanding you need to kickstart a successful career. You will also carry out testing and user research and come up with solutions for any issues that arise.

…and what you’re going to learn…

This is an opportunity to explore the whole area of CX (customer experience) and UX (user experience) design, learning alongside other digital and transformation Specialists while contributing your own ideas to the team.

How are you going to get there?

We’re looking for analytical thinkers who combine a good knowledge of computer operating systems, hardware and software with a passion for customer experience design. You’ll also need plenty of initiative, persistence and attention to detail. By the end of the apprenticeship, your scheme mentor and workmates will have helped you add lots more skills to your locker, along with the experience of new technologies and methodologies you need to kickstart a successful career. You’ll be working to ensure new network infrastructure is built on time, within budget and to the required standard. Among other things, this will involve working closely with build, planning and delivery teams in the field to resolve any potential issues and keep delays to a minimum.

Over the course of the apprenticeship, you will have opportunities to develop a broad range of technical knowledge and skills. Key areas you will build expertise in include:

  • Fibre to the premise (FTTP), hybrid fiber-coaxial (HFC) and physical infrastructure access (PIA) network infrastructure
  • AC / DC power
  • Laser safety and use
  • Headend-related architecture

How are you going to get there?

We’re looking for super-organised, super-assertive people who are interested in network infrastructure and have a passionate desire to succeed. The job involves liaising with lots of different people and teams, so it helps if you have strong communication and influencing skills. You’ll also need a full driving licence so you can travel between sites. By the end of the apprenticeship, your scheme mentor and workmates will have helped you add lots more capabilities to your locker, along with the experience and understanding you need to kickstart a successful career.
