Field Technician

Our Field Technicians are the face of Virgin Media, visiting customers’ homes to install and repair our groundbreaking broadband, TV and home phone products

Let’s talk about what you’ll be doing…

Our Field Technicians connect our customers to everything that matters to them. You’ll be visiting their homes to install or repair our phone, TV and broadband products, offer advice and tips to get the most from our services, and leave them happy with our heartfelt service.

You’ll be taught how to run cables properly, measure and adjust signal levels, make and change connections, configure state-of-the-art equipment and give our customers the low down on how their services work.

At Virgin Media, you’ll be part of a growing business, we’ll keep growing by attracting, and keeping, customers with our sensational products, ultrafast speeds and heartfelt service.

How are you going to get there?

Ideally, you’ll be comfortable using cutting edge technology, enjoy solving problems (especially using your hands) and have a talent for talking to people – while a full driving license and head for heights would also be useful!

Civil Engineer

With heartfelt support from your scheme mentor and other workmates, you’ll learn all about design, technical specifications, health and safety, best practice techniques for ground works, and how to mediate a wide range of matters between various business divisions.

It’s a wonderful opportunity to play a key role in Project Lightning, which is devoted to expanding our super-charged network to reach more homes and businesses across the country.

You will also be acting as the main support network for our grounds work staff, helping supervise and co-ordinate a range of build and projects on site. And, you’ll gain hands-on understanding of associated street works and communications industry legislation.

How are you going to get there?

Passion and determination are essential, especially as this scheme can last up to 36 months! You’ll also need to be super organised, self-motivated and pro-active – with a full driving license to travel between sites.

We’ll expect you to have at least five GCSEs, including Maths (Grade B), English and Science (Grades C+/4-9) or equivalent, although we’re just as interested in what makes people want to join one of the UK’s most forward thinking and fun-loving companies.

Provisioning Engineer

Provisioning Engineers design, plan and configure the telecommunications circuits of our ground-breaking network that serves Virgin Media Business (VMB) customers

Let’s talk about what you’ll be doing…

As a Provisioning Engineer, you’ll get fantastic guidance from your scheme mentor and other workmates. You’ll learn how to design and implement layer 2 and layer 3 IP VPN (Internet Protocol Virtual Private Network) solutions for customers ranging from small businesses to the government’s Public Services Network (PSN).

Our IP VPN services bring voice, data and video together on a single, private network that travels at ultra-fast speeds using our next generation fibre network – connecting our customers’ sites in all sorts of exciting ways.

Eventually, you’ll be able to configure large, complex layer 3 network changes as directed by our business customers. Working closely with our project coordinators and third-party vendors like BT and Vodafone, you will get the chance to build, provide and upgrade circuits on a variety of bearer types. And, you’ll also get to commission and provide our very own WDM and TDM platforms.

How are you going to get there?

You’ll need to be a master communicator with excellent customer service skills and an appreciation of the issues involved in a customer focused environment. We want you to take ownership of queries, escalate them when necessary, and come to swift resolutions that satisfy our customers.

As a technical role, you should have an A-level in a STEM* based subject and GCSEs in Maths and English (Grades C+/4-9) or equivalent. Specific technical qualifications, such as a National Diploma in electronics or telecommunications, and certified IT routing, switching and provisioning skills will also set you apart, but aren’t necessary.

Capacity Planner

ARE YOU READY TO MAKE BIG PLANS FOR THE FUTURE?

Virgin Media Capacity Planners design the network solutions that enable us to grow our industry leading network infrastructure

Our Capacity Planner Apprenticeship Scheme welcomes both women and men who share a passion for problem solving; typically using IT software to develop a variety of network solutions across our organisation.

You’ll be trained by your scheme mentor and other workmates to deliver cost effective and appropriately scaled network solutions to expand our network and move with the ever-changing needs of our business and customers.

All our Apprenticeship Schemes are offered on permanent contracts. And, around 90% of apprentices stay on with us – while others will have gained transferable skills that are sought after elsewhere.

Let’s talk about what you’ll be doing…

As part of the scheme you will be helping us develop the 12-18-month Network Capacity Plan. This will include looking at space and power at a site level, as well as working closely with our Design, Build and Deploy teams.

We’ll also need you to check capacity for business orders and provide costs, proactively identifying opportunities to optimise performance and capacity across the network.

How are you going to get there?

As a technical role, you’ll need to have an A-level in a STEM based subject and GCSEs in Maths and English (Grades C+/4-9) or equivalent. A general understanding of routed and switched networks would be useful (but don’t worry, we’ll teach you everything you need to know!).

Knowledge of techniques used in analysing, assessing and resolving complex technology problems would be welcome but are not deal breakers. We’re just as interested in what makes people want to join one of the UK’s most forward thinking and fun-loving companies, and your passion and determination will count for a lot.

You will be working with data a lot in your role, so confidence with MS Excel and Microsoft Office is highly desirable.

You’ll need to be relentless in your pursuit of results, able to work alone or as part of a team and constantly coming up with ways that will make our customers’ lives brighter, easier… and a bit more fun!

Our Network Planner Apprenticeship Scheme is a fantastic opportunity for both women and men to kickstart their careers with one of the UK’s most forward-thinking and fun-loving companies.

With the heartfelt guidance of your scheme mentor and other workmates, you’ll learn how to produce detailed, accurate and efficient plans to get our leading services out to customers. You’ll also find out how to put together all the required drawings and information that our contract partners need to get the job done!

As well as discussing our customers’ needs – by visiting their premises and arranging surveys to make sure they get what they want, when they need it – you’ll also be working closely with our internal teams, providing information that will help us do business better.

Ensuring design documents are planned to specification, handling multiple customer orders, controlling costs and coming up with new ways of making our customers’ lives easier are also hallmarks of a successful Network Planner.

How are you going to get there?

Our Network Planner role does involve understanding detailed technical specifications. A Level 2 diploma in a related field (IT, Telecoms, Electrics) or previous experience working with HFC or Fibre Networks would be a bonus, but not essential.

As a technical role, you will need to have five GSCEs, including Maths, English and Science (Grade C or above, Grade 4-9). But we’re just as interested in women and men who share a passion for planning and are willing to learn!

If you are a devil for detail, able to use multiple systems and hell bent on providing heavenly customer service that’s on time and on budget, then this role is tailormade for you!

A Business Planner is an integral role that’s essentially the link between the design and build of our network solutions and their physical delivery to our valued customers.

With heartfelt guidance from your scheme mentor and other workmates, you’ll gain experience and exposure across our creative design and planning activities that incorporate telephone, data, digital TV and our super-fast broadband networks.

We want bright sparks who can take ownership of technical solutions from beginning to end; making sure our products are constructed and installed properly, meeting delivery dates – and making our VMB customers happy!

You’ll take part in planning the most efficient routes for our ground-breaking fibre network and developing Network Upgrades, including customised solutions, that need to be kept a constant eye on.

You’ll also need to be able to establish internal and external relationships, working closely with colleagues and our contract partners – using surveys and quality audits that we’ll train you to conduct – to make sure our performance never dips.

How are you going to get there?

We have 14 Business Planner Apprenticeship roles open to women and men who are comfortable with cutting edge technology, enjoy solving problems and have a talent for talking to people – while reflecting our forward-thinking and fun-loving brand.

As a technical role, you’ll need to have five GSCEs, including Maths, English and Science (Grade C or above, Grade 4-9). But, a willingness to learn and an affection for problem solving are more important than qualifications.

How are you going to get there?

With fantastic help from your scheme mentor and other workmates, you’ll learn how provide IT support for business cases at the frontline of our VMB operations, making sure our customers are satisfied with our ground-breaking products and services.

You’ll be completing technical diagnostics and troubleshooting so that cases are resolved as quickly and effectively as possible. But don’t worry, we’ll show you how to do all of this!  As well as identifying the root cause of the problem, you will also need to find solutions in collaboration with our Business, Technology and Innovation functions – all while keeping your cool in a busy environment!

Eventually, you’ll be taking care of the management, escalation and communication of all cases to current ITIL standards – a set of best practices that focus on aligning IT services with business needs.

How are you going to get there?

As a customer facing role, you’ll need to show a real understanding of how important excellent customer service is, and how to represent us as a trusted advisor and go-to contact for all technical-related customer enquiries.

Some previous customer service experience would be another advantage – but we’re more interested in dynamic free-thinkers who can manage relationships and are passionate about putting smiles on customers’ faces.

Software Developer

At Virgin Media, our Software Developers get to develop and maintain a collection of software solutions that we use to simulate and forecast customer demand for our cutting-edge networks and let us know when any upgrades are needed.

Let’s talk about what you’ll be doing…

As part of our Software Developer Apprenticeship Scheme, we’ll train you to understand what our customers want, develop appropriate software solutions and test them until we get the results we want.

With excellent guidance from your scheme mentor and other supportive workmates, you’ll grow a deeper understanding of our network and data, and get the opportunity to delve into all sorts of development related activities including building and testing code across the front end, business logic and database layers. You’ll do this whilst working with a wide range of exciting development technologies and applications.

We’ll also ask you to gather user requirements and present software functionality to key stakeholders – and be able to communicate to an audience who may not share the same technical expertise that you will have gained from us.

How are you going to get there?

We’re particularly interested in who you are and why you want to join one of the UK’s most free thinking and fun loving companies. Although, as a technical role you will need to have at least one A level or equivalent in a STEM* based subject.

And, while it’s not a deal breaker, some programming skills (OOP) especially in .NET, C# and SQL, a general knowledge of routed and switched networks and the techniques used to analyse, assess and resolve complex technology challenges would grab our attention.

Apprenticeship: Level 4 Software Developer
Duration: 18 months
Location: Reading
Requirements: 5 GSCEs, including Maths, English and Science (Grade C or above, Grade 4-9). A level in a STEM subject. Completion of Level 2 Functional Skills exams also required unless exempt
Salary: £19,000 + salary progression based on performance + amazing benefits
