What’s Venue Sales all about?

We base ourselves in different locations each week and set up in what could be a shopping centre or a supermarket, and you chat and pitch to as many customers as you can. You build rapport with them, introduce the brand, ask them questions, learn what the best offer is for them – then, hopefully, the sales follow!

Was that something you’d done before?

Not at all – before joining Virgin Media I was based in an office for over 10 years. I was fed up just sat at a desk and felt like life was passing me by. I wanted to get up in the morning and actually want to go to work, something which would give me a buzz, something completely different.

That’s why I moved to Virgin Media in 2017 and I don’t regret a minute of it! I’m a people-person, so I wanted to be able to speak to people face-to-face. I can speak to anybody and build a rapport now, but before I was quite shy – doing this job has really built my confidence.

That’s great! But maybe not the job for just anybody?

I’d say as long as you’re positive, friendly, enthusiastic and passionate, and not phased by a bit of rejection as lots of people do say ‘No thanks’ it’s a job you can do.

Just smile! People will look at you and smile back, then you can speak to them. Even if it’s not a sale, it’s still a chat and that’s all you need. The rest will just fall into place.

I’d never done face-to-face sales before, but just by chatting and being confident, the sales will come.

What’s your favourite part of the job?

Meeting new people. Every day is a different day – you never know who you’re going to speak to. Sometimes you’ll get someone’s life story! Sometimes you might make someone’s day. You might even be the only conversation that person has all day. I get a total buzz out of the job, and obviously I love getting my sales, but I also just love getting out and about and meeting new people.

And how about Virgin Media as an employer?

It’s an awesome brand and they’re fantastic to work for. The starting package is brilliant: company car, company phone, iPad, great healthcare and dental package too. Along with the benefits, the training is fantastic from the first day to the last. The support is amazing, if you ever need help – there’s always someone just a phone call away.

Good to know they’ve got your back. “Building connections that really matter” is a big part of what Virgin Media is all about – what does that mean to you?

I’d relate that to our values. What we do and what’s important to us – being caring, honest and straight-up with our customers from day one. I always give heartfelt service, and part of that is being able to build a rapport and a connection, taking them through the journey with trust and honesty.

How inclusive to you feel Virgin Media is as an employer?

I’m surrounded by colleagues of different ages, different ethnic backgrounds and I love that Virgin Media are doing so much to try and encourage more women to apply for positions in sales and engineering where we are really under-represented. When I joined in 2017, I was the only female in the sales team.  I was a little apprehensive at first but it soon became clear that they really aspire to a balanced workforce and it’s your attitude and ability to have great conversations with customers is what they look for.  There are more females in the Venue team but we’d love to see more come and join us!
