What made you join Virgin Media?
I spent some time working for a supermarket, but my uncle worked for Virgin Media and strongly recommended it to me. I left retail to join Virgin Media and never looked back.
I’ve stayed because the commission is good, the benefits are great, and there are always competitions and fun things going on to keep you engaged and rewarded. Also, they’ve been flexible around hours which is helpful because I have a son, so it fits well around my life and responsibilities. It’s not somewhere I’d ever want to leave.
What are the key challenges you face?
As we’re target driven, you have to stay engaged and have the right mind-set. It’s really important to remain positive and know that it will happen for you if you keep trying. Some people give up too easily, so you have to be resilient.
Having said that, it’s not like other sales jobs. Even though it can be daunting, new starters get loads of support, it’s not a scary “sink or swim” situation, we gradually build up your confidence.
What’s the best thing about your job?
I don’t work weekends, bank holidays or Christmas, which is useful when you have kids! Also, I don’t think I’d be as well off working anywhere else, not to mention the discounts we get across Virgin products.
The colleagues and environment are also a big part of it. Everyone knows each other, everyone’s friendly, and there are always fun events going on: raffles, charity days, baking, all kinds of things. It’s not like going to work; it’s fun, like a family.
It’s not typical cold-calling either, people actually want the product! Virgin is a good brand with good products, so it isn’t a hard sell.
How inclusive do you feel Virgin Media is as an employer?
It’s really inclusive. I’ve worked here a long time now and everyone knows you. New starters have their pictures up on our screens, they get introduced to everyone, and we get to learn interesting facts about them.
Everyone always feels included, even though there are so many people from so many different cultures and backgrounds.
What’s your fondest memory of your time at Virgin Media?
There are incentive based competitions which Virgin run where you have the chance to win a holiday. I managed to win it one year and went on an all-expense paid trip to New York!
I went on a cruise around the Statue of Liberty, I went up the Empire State Building, there was rooftop dining; it was an unforgettable experience, but you have to work really hard to win something like that.
