We recently caught up with Simon Kearney, Head of Commercial and Wayleave MDU to talk about his career in Virgin Media Business and the progression opportunities available.
Read what Simon said:
How long did you work for Virgin Media Business?
I have worked for Virgin Media Business (VMB) for just under seven years.
What made you join Virgin Media Business?
I joined in a temp role after my last university exam and met some amazing people that continued to push and develop me and I haven’t looked back.
Can you tell me a little more about the area you worked in and your role?
I managed all our field sales teams and all of our existing customers within SOHO/SME division. We built the division from three people and now we are over 250, it’s been an amazing story and one I am very proud to be a part of.
What’s made you stay with the business?
VMB is a great place to work and if you are proactive with your career and development you can progress quickly. Our Managing Director, Peter Kelly and the rest of the senior leadership team are really keen to give people chances to prove themselves.
Can you tell me a little more about the type of training you can receive in Virgin Media Business?
Over the last two years we have got a lot better at running development courses to help everyone who is interested to progress to the next level. The team and I have completed negotiation programmes, management training, sales training and many other courses all organised by the Training and Development (T&D) teams.
Are there many progression opportunities?
I have done six jobs in seven years, so it’s definitely a yes from my experience.
What’s it like to work here?
I have worked for VMB through two big transformation periods, which means it’s been fast paced, hard work and lots of fun. There is never a dull moment and there is always an opportunity to seize, get involved and help, which is fantastic for your career.
Do you feel that you have a good work life/home life balance?
The business really encourages a ‘work hard and play hard’ culture. For six of my years here I have also played semi-professional basketball and this has always been supported by my managers and seen as a really positive thing.
What one piece of advice would you give to a candidate interested in working in Virgin Media Business?
Embrace change and new ideas and work hard.
How would you describe the organisation?
Fast paced and rewarding
What’s the culture like?
I think it’s a really genuine, open and performance driven culture.
How engaged do you feel with the business?
Very engaged, we have got a lot better at communicating our strategy and articulating how everyone can play a role in helping VMB succeed.
The best thing about working for Virgin Media Business is…
