I first began working on behalf of Virgin Media at the tender age of 27 as an installation engineer for a contract partner. All my previous job roles were customer serviced based, so even though I knew my skills were transferable, there were a whole load of new ones I would have to learn.
Yeah sure I had used a screwdriver and done the odd bits of DIY around the house, but I had never had what they refer to as a manual job before. I needed a new challenge.
From the off, I was made to feel welcome by all the managers and technicians, which was really heart-warming as at the time, I had entered a role with very few female engineers.
In four years, I have worked with a contractor; I have covered numerous roles including management and even ran my own team for a while. This was great but I didn’t feel I had many career opportunities, so that’s when I decided to apply for a role as a Service and Install Technician with Virgin Media.
As well as having more career opportunities, the role came with more benefits, private health care, great holiday entitlement and discounted TV and Broadband.
Luckily enough, I was successful in my application.
I officially joined Virgin Media in August 2011 and I haven’t looked back since. I continued in my role as a Service and Install Technician for three years. I found it to be such a rewarding job.
Customers where so happy to see a female technician, especially as there’s an assumption that it is typically a male orientated role. Many female customers in particular, felt more comfortable having a female in their home completing the work.
As well as it being a rewarding job, I was also part of a family, cliché I know, but it’s true. I was made welcome from the start and had built up great relationships with others in the business at all levels from technicians to coaches to management. As a tech, I had monthly one to one’s with my manager. In the meetings a lot of things were covered, such as, my performance, my career path and a general chat about life and we also discussed my personal development plan (PDP). It’s not just all about figures. People do care about your wellbeing and where you see yourself going.
Here you have the opportunity to let your manager know what direction you are looking to go in, whatever that might be, for example, networks, coaching, management or training in my case, your manager will then help you in achieving your goal.
As well as PDPs, you have the ongoing support of your managers, coaches and trainers in the field. There is also an online learning portal, iDiscover. On this portal, you can access different online training to better yourself both in your everyday job and also for your personal development.
If you are prepared to work hard you will be rewarded.
After three years of being in the field, I was so happy when I landed my dream role as a Regional Trainer. I am in my third year of being a trainer and I absolutely love it. I’m part of a technical training team where part of my role is to coach and up skill existing technicians, train apprentices and new starters on how to become a Service and Install technicians on both the HFC and FTTP networks, terminology you will become familiar with if you become part of the Virgin family.
Virgin Media is by far the best company I have ever work for, they have a great set of values and I would hugely recommend anyone to become part of the Virgin Media team.
It’s a job for life.
