Hi Jo, lovely to meet you!
So, you’re Head of Technical Solutions and Innovation for Virgin Media Business? Can you tell me more about your role?
Of course, my role is focused on working with our customers to understand their business requirements and challenges. We listen to better understand their needs and then design a technical solution that meets and exceeds them.
That sounds great, so how long have you worked here?
I joined the business in 1998, so 19 years now!
Oh wow, that’s such a long time. What’s made you stay for so long?
I think that I have had such a varied career here. For me, it’s about progression, what I can achieve and the flexibility around the role. That’s been so important and I really like that I’m able to make my role work around me.
What made you join the company?
I have to say it’s the opportunity I’ve been given. In my experience, you can really develop your skills in this business and that’s a real driver for someone like me. When I started here, we were NTL and I came in as a designer working on customer opportunities and product development. Now I’m Head of Technical Solutions and Innovation. It’s taken hard work and dedication but it’s definitely paid off. Working here was one of my first roles out of university. I studied a Technical degree and I always knew I wanted to move into a technical role once I had graduated. I found that opportunity here and 19 years later I’m still here.
That’s amazing how far you have come in this business. You’re living proof that you can work your way up the career ladder here!
From your experience and in your opinion, how can someone be successful in your area?
I would definitely say interest and passion, not just in the business but also to help customers. Providing them with the understanding of who we are and what we can do for them. That’s key! Of course, you will need technical knowledge – that’s a given. The ability to work and collaborate with numerous stakeholders and do it well! It may sound simple, but you have to be vigilant and have a real flare for the job.
Those interpersonal skills are essential. You need to be able to speak and liaise with customers in a professional and personal manner to provide a real exciting experience and also have the ability to bring that back into the business.

- And adaptable to change
What type of people do you look for when hiring? Are there any certain characteristics that really stand out to you?
I think for me, interpersonal skills are so important. So someone who can hold a conversation and that isn’t scared to challenge the norm. I think someone who can hold their own and is comfortable with conflict if it ever arises. Of course Technical competence is important but if you join this business you need much more than just that.
If you could give one piece of advise to someone looking to work within your team, what would it be?
Be authentic and trust your instincts. Make sure you speak up because there are plenty of people that want to be heard!
Where do you see yourself in the future?
Hmm, I would say I see myself making the technical voice louder for Virgin Media Business. I would also like to be the one leading the way within this area.
