Our history & Liberty Global

We’re all about building connections that really matter. For over 20 years we’ve built and grown our business on pioneers and big thinkers. We’re super -proud of the amazing things we’ve achieved – and we love to shout about them.

Just like other Virgin brands, we’re the brainchild of Sir Richard Branson. Way back in 1999, before phones went smart and media went social, savvy Sir Richard spotted an opportunity to bring a new mobile phone network to the UK – and Virgin Mobile was born.

On the other side of town, two of the biggest players in the cable market – NTL and Telewest – merged. Pioneers after Sir Richard’s own heart, they knew a good thing when they saw it, and in 2006 bought us for an eye-watering £962 million (honey, we’re worth it). Smart move guys, together we’ve flourished ever since. In 2007, the whole company took our name (a true sign of commitment) and boom! We’re Virgin Media.

Clearly loving a collaboration, in 2013 we became part of Liberty Global – the world’s biggest TV and broadband company, operating in 10 European countries as Virgin Media, Unitymedia, Telenet and UPC.

Liberty Global owns 50% of VodafoneZiggo, a joint venture in the Netherlands with 4 million customers subscribing to 10 million fixed-line and 5 million mobile services. VodafoneZiggo also has significant content investments in ITV, All3Media, LionsGate, Formula E racing series and several regional sports networks. Liberty Global is such a big part of the business we have evolved into today, click here to learn more about them on their website.

At Virgin Media, we’re still at the cutting-edge of fibre- optic broadband – over twenty 20 years after we started. One of the biggest names in entertainment, we’re consistently delighting our customers with 1000s of hours of live and On-Demand programming TV, box sets, movies, sport and apps.
Whether we’re growing our business or connecting more customers with the things and people they care about, we challenge ourselves every day. Because everything we do – at work or for our customers –helps towards building connections that really matter.
