How we hire

We've designed nifty ways of hiring that will show you off, at your very best. It helps us get to know who you are, what makes you tick and what matters most to you. There's range of different ways in which we get to know you better. Every process is different, so we've shared info on all of them, even though you might only encounter a couple along the way.

A call to get to know you better

First up, a member of our recruitment team will call you to get down to the nitty-gritty and understand how your skills, knowledge and experience stack up for the job you’re applying for. We’ll also want to know the salary you’re after and your notice period.
We’re also here to answer your questions, so don’t just tell us your motivations for joining – give us a good grilling too.

On-demand video interviewing

Our on-demand video interviewing platform allows you to record and submit your answers to a set of pre-defined questions, any time day or night, seven days a week! There’s a smart little ‘hints & tips’ video too, to help you get the most out of the time available. Think about things like the camera angle (we don’t need to see up your nose) and finding a calm, quiet place to record it, where you won’t be disturbed.

Occupational ability and personality assessments

First up, we promise this isn’t as scary as it might sound!
We’ll send you an invitation to complete an online personality assessment, and you may also be asked to complete a brief ability assessment too. You’ll provide answers to the questions based on your preferences, how you’re most likely to behave, think and act. Once you’ve answered all the questions, we’ll get a psychometric evaluation of your professional style and performance. It gives us an indication about your preferred styles and approach to working life, which we can then take time to explore more at your interview.

SJTs otherwise known as Situational Judgement Testing, are a bit like role play. They’re designed to replicate scenarios you could find yourself in at work. We’ll give you a situation and four answers. You simply choose the one that most closely matches how you’d react in real life. If you’ve never done anything like this before, don’t worry – we’ll guide you through it.

Discovery days

In other companies these sometimes get called assessment centres, but we prefer discovery day because we see it as the perfect chance to discover as much as we can about you. As you might have seen, we’re insatiably curious. That’s why we’ll give you all kinds of tasks and exercises (not planks or squats), that will show off your skills, behaviours and values. We know it might be daunting, but there’s no need to freak out. These are fun, informative sessions and we’ll do everything we can to make sure you’re relaxed. If we invite you to a discovery day, you’ll get plenty of information in advance.

Live virtual interviewing

In today’s world, the use of video when interviewing is more present and more crucial than ever. So, if you’re invited to meet one of our managers virtually, we’ll send you an invitation with full instructions and all the details you’ll need. All you need to do is prepare as you would for a meeting in the real world, only this time it doesn’t matter if you’re still wearing your PJ bottoms…

Face-to-face interviews

When we’re hiring, we use a behavioural framework made up of the skills and traits people need to be successful at Virgin Media. Each role’s different so for every position, we work out which of the 12 behaviours are most important. When we’re interviewing for a role, we assess people against the behaviours we’ve identified.

If we’re meeting face to face, we’ll already have some information about you from your telephone interview and your personality assessment. We’ll use this information alongside the framework and ask you a range of competency-based questions.

These are designed to help us in understanding how your skills and experience match the role you’ve applied for. There’s a certain technique to answering competency-based questions. If you’ve not done an interview like this before, it’s worth reading up on them and practising a bit. Don’t be nervous, be prepared and bring your best self. We can’t wait to meet you!
