The people make this job what it is and the team that I work with, it’s more than just a job, it’s a way of life.
I have 12 in house technicians who I look after and I also look after a partner team as well and there are about 14 technicians in that.
It’s quite a large team so they keep me busy. A typical day for them is a mixture of carrying out service work and carrying out installs for new customers.
It’s very much customer focused, the element is always on getting it right first time and that’s what we try to fix.
In our division we take on apprentice level all the way up through to Principle Technician and then the ultimate goal is really then is to become an Access Field Manager.
There is a really good career path which I have never really seen as good as what it is at Virgin Media. It seems to work very well and seeing the guys go from one stage, working their way up through the business, it’s great.
Technicians only work 4 days out of 7 so they’ve always got a 4 day week, so they’re getting 3 days off. The flexibility of their working and home life is very very good, but this is a tough job, you are spending a lot of your time outside in all elements working. I don’t sit down and enjoy my tea at home until I know all my boys are in safely. I call them my boys because they are my team that I look after.
You need to be totally flexible, very organised and above all you have to be passionate to do this job.
I leave the house at 5.30 and get in at 6 o’clock, that’s what this job is all about and I love it – I wouldn’t work anywhere else!
