I really like the fact that whenever Virgin goes in to a market, it tries to disrupt it and do things differently. I thought that’s really something I really want to be a part of.
Currently I work in the marketing team at Virgin Media Business, on my first placement in the graduate scheme.
Day-to-day that means I am involved with three areas really. The Brand team – making sure all our communications have that Virgin tone of voice. I work a bit with the PR team to make sure that we shout about all the good news that happening in Virgin Media Business. I also work in the Marcomms team, so every time we send out an email communication, we’ve got to make sure that it looks like it comes from us.
The graduate scheme is 3 years in total and it comprises for 4 placements. The first 2 you’ll start in Operations and then Sales, but the last 2 are up to you. You choose what area of the business you really want to go in to and really choose your own adventure to get there.
I’m a Finance graduate, I’m in my second year and I’m currently doing a rotation in the financial planning and analysis team. We basically review the consumer numbers on a monthly basis we condense it and try and basically tell the story behind the number so that they can be used to explain our performance to senior management and throughout the business.
So the finance graduate scheme is a 3 year long programme, you do 3 different rotations in 3 completely different teams and the aim is that then you get as much exposure and as much knowledge about the business as you can. And then whilst you are doing that Virgin Media will also support you to do you studies as well, to do the CIMA qualification which is the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants. So that means what you are leaning at home, you can then also apply to your role on a day to day basis as well.
The thing I really like about working for a Virgin company is you are really given the licence to do it your own way. Whenever I’m working on something I know that I am allowed to maybe think “how would I do this” rather than “how would someone else do this” or “how should this be done”.
I think it’s quite cliché but the people here are really really good. Everyone is just so fun and friendly but still performance driven. I was so excited and enthusiastic, I just really knew I wanted to work for Virgin Media – I was just so happy when I got that call!
