What does success look like in Sales?

I first started as a Direct Sales representative 20 years ago in January - not the best time of year to start in the North East in my hometown of Hartlepool.

My job was to sell our Telephone and TV services to new customers, with Broadband a few years away yet! After working as a “ Door Knocker “ for two years I was thrust into my first management position; this was an incredible opportunity for me to develop my team and deliver the numbers. In all honesty, it was not without its challenges, but teamwork was key to drive success and it still is within Virgin Media. To be successful within this business in my opinion, you have to be passionate, resilient and innovative, along with being prepared to do huge amounts of hard work! You get out what you put in.

I was promoted to Sales Manager and opened my first Telesales operation a couple of years later with a total of four people! This has now grown to over 1600 across two UK sites and Offshore. The Cable industry grew fast, with huge product innovation and massive opportunities, which is still key for the business today. Broadband was launched and I was then promoted to Sales and Marketing Director. After 10 years and through various changes, we became Virgin Media and I took responsibility for the Telesales and Movers centres and our fantastic Mobile product.
