Network Engineer Apprenticeship

We have a clear aim to achieve a 50/50 gender balanced workforce by 2025 and encourage applicants from females to all our apprentice roles.

Duration: 24 months

Location: Hook. Please ensure you live within a commutable distance.

Salary: £17,500

So why us?

In 2017, we announced our long-term vision of achieving gender parity by 2025. It’s super important for us to reflect the communities that we serve, particularly for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) roles. That’s why we’re looking for loads of great men and women who are wanting a new challenge! It’s all about getting the best from a diverse workforce, so we are encouraging you to bring your skills to a more tech-based role.

We’re offering a fantastic opportunity to join our 2018 Apprenticeship scheme as a Network Engineer Apprentice, in the Network and Business Planning Team. There’ll be lots of support along the way, and you’ll be able to learn what makes our network so special from the experts in your own team.

What is the job?

With the help of your scheme mentor and other colleagues, you’ll learn how to provide and ensure cost effective and appropriately scaled network capacity is provided across Virgin Medi and all other markets that make up Liberty Global. You’ll be able to ensure that the service offered to customers across the network meets today’s needs, whilst ensuring that existing capacity is optimised and managing the lifecycle of the existing infrastructure.

You will be involved in creating inputs for the 12-18 month Network Capacity Plan, including looking at space and power at a site level, as well as working closely with our Design, Build and Deploy teams. You will be checking capacity for business orders and providing costs, and we’ll be wanting you to proactively identify opportunities to optimise performance and capacity across the network.

So, what do we need from you?

Passion and determination are important - you’ll need to work hard and see the training through. We’re looking for you to have good influencing and communication skills, excellent time-keeping, and a focus on delivering a high-quality service.

Qualification wise, we’d like you to have the following:
* Educated to UK ‘A’ level or equivalent in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Maths) Subjects - achieving grades A* - C
* GCSEs in Maths and English at grade C or above (or equivalent qualifications).

A general understanding of networks would be useful - but don’t worry, we’ll teach you everything you need to know (and lots more besides!).

You will be working with data a lot in your role, so confidence with MS Excel and Microsoft Office is highly desirable. You should have a strong desire to learn and become competent in analysing, assessing, and resolving complex problems through the use of data; applying these will enable you to drive tangible benefits for the team. Experience with VBA would be beneficial, but not essential - we just need you to be willing to learn!

At Virgin Media and Liberty Global, you can trust us to do the right thing by you. We’re a great place to work - and we offer impressive benefits too. Get ready for a generous holiday allowance, contributory pension, performance related bonus and, of course, discounts on our fantastic mobile, broadband and cable products. Once you’ve completed your Apprenticeship, you’d be welcomed into the team permanently, with a salary to match.
