Senior Legal Counsel - Technology & Innovation and Consumer Products

Role Purpose

This is an exciting time to join Virgin Media as a Senior Legal Counsel within the Liberty Global Group of companies. This role is supporting the Virgin Media Technology & Innovation and Consumer Products Legal Team to provide senior legal engagement and support to Virgin Media Technology & Innovation, Virgin Media Procurement and Virgin Media Interconnect. This role provides commercially focused, accurate, effective and timely legal advice, analysis and support to the business on a broad range of Technology, Procurement and Consumer Products legal matters, including advice on commercial products and proposition and associated third-party supply contracts (including customer premise equipment supply agreements, technology middleware and application agreements and other Consumer-related product and service agreements), high-value and strategically important technology arrangements which are bespoke and complex in nature, and the GDPR programme for the purposes of negotiating GDPR amendments with our suppliers and customers.

This role would be based in Hook, Hampshire, with some flexibility to work from other locations, such as home working or Hammersmith. This is a highly experienced team of professional Senior Counsels and we are looking for a strong team player to further strengthen our capability and offering.

Key Responsibilities

* Works closely with the Legal Director - Consumer, Head of Legal - Technology & Innovation and Consumer Products and fellow Senior Legal Counsel and Legal Counsel on all Procurement and Consumer legal issues, taking ownership of matters, as appropriate

* Provides focused, accurate, effective and timely legal and policy advice and analysis on Consumer related matters to enable the business to function to meet and manage its objectives

* Partners with the business in the provision of legal advice and/or the setting of policy; works closely with the business, occasionally sitting within the business in order to build relationships and better understand key legal issues

* Responds to internal and external contacts in a timely and effective manner

* Proactively progresses matters to a conclusion through efficient and effective planning and management to meet competing demands

* Identifies areas of risk in relation to Consumer legal matters, including related regulatory matters, and assists in providing solutions to manage these risks. Escalates important issues or concerns and seeks assistance and direction where appropriate

* Supports other areas when necessary, taking on responsibilities to support the legal function and business as a whole

* Seeks feedback from the business, external partners or clients to ensure quality of service and work output is maintained to the highest standards and that deliverables and expectations are exceeded

* Stays up to date with legal developments and key business information, is aware of the marketplace and the company’s position within it, and shares knowledge within the function; recognises when changes require action and advising of relevant stakeholders. Develops expertise in areas of specialism

* Shares knowledge with the legal department as a whole, taking an active role in departmental educational opportunities, periodic departmental meetings and other initiatives designed to promote departmental communication and cohesiveness

* Leads by example, developing standards and practices for the business functional area, motivating and informing other lawyers within the department to provide the best possible legal advice and support

Required Qualifications and Experience

* Degree level education / relevant professional qualifications

* Significant and demonstrable commercial law experience of at least 5 years, preferably gained both in private practice with a top city-style law firm and In-house in a commercial environment. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in negotiating large deals with outsourcing contracts and procurement.
