The newly-created role of Data Scientist role at Virgin Media will play a major role in delivering the data and insight agenda to extract maximum business value from the multiple datasets across multiple platforms in VM using various BI tools. You will work as part of a high-performing data intelligence team, which has the remit to ensure maximum value is gained from its data assets across the business.

The perfect candidate for us will be passionate about exploring and investigating data at the purist level. You will enjoy applying data techniques to illustrate insight or data capability and also be excited by evaluating new technologies and techniques to drive faster and higher value from our huge data lakes and repositories.

Role purpose

The consumer insight & analytics area is a new organisation recently formed through the merging of a number of data-led teams. The core purpose of the function is to transform current capabilities to drive competitive advantage through performing deep analytics in order to provide actionable insight and cross-channel communications.

As part of this group, the Data Insight Solutions team has the remit to drive the data intelligence agenda for the wider group to ensure maximum value is gained from its data assets in the business and this knowledge is then consolidated and disseminated.

Within this, the data research team are responsible for investigating and analysing the commercial value of data assets as well as delivering these assets in the necessary platforms to be consumed. They are also responsible for best in class ‘Big Data’ strategy and commercialising data into a standalone revenue stream.

It is within data research where the data scientist have several key responsibilities:
* Translating consumer business problems into analytics use cases and requirements
* Use expertise and knowledge in statistics and machine learning to derive key insights across various consumer business challenges
* Ability to apply the latest machine learning approaches and the latest data science techniques to everyday business problems
* Data preparation and wrangling skills with ability to transform data into suitable formats and outputs.
* Ability to visualise and communicate findings in an understandable manner to non-technical users
* Competent at programming in various languages to include R, SQL and Python in order to create and manage algorithms and complex optimisations.
* Work in a multi-disciplinary environment with highly skilled people in data visualisation, data engineering and analysis
* Develop strong links with the academic world to stay ahead of the curve on the latest methods and their real world application in industry

Key accountabilities
* Help transform the data intelligence environment for Virgin Media Consumer Division through development of various analytical products
* Implement a data science mindset where the data importance or value is not constrained by end requirements
* Collaborate across the business to develop relationships with data partners to develop a holistic customer view

Knowledge, experience and skills
* Championing the application of data to drive thought or influence strategy and decisions
* Help transform the data intelligence environment for the Virgin Media consumer division through development of various analytically-focussed projects
* Collaborate across the business to develop relationships with data partners to develop a holistic customer view
* Experience of providing analytical insights in a large, data rich organisation to a senior audience
* Experience with Netezza or equivalent and Hadoop is a must
* Experience of working with visualisation applications e.g. Qlik
* No SQL or distributed technologies would be a bonus
* Experience in Netezza and Hadoop or equivalent environments
