My Finance Experiences: One Year In

Emma Rowlands

I am now in the first month of my second year on the Virgin Media Finance grad scheme. I've written a blog before, click here to read about my first couple of weeks.

Here I have joined the Consumer team and will predominantly be looking at Revenue, quite the change from my first year where I was looking at OpEx and Capex in Support Finance! This is one of the reasons I love the grad scheme at Virgin Media – you are always given the opportunity to try new things and develop in a wide variety of areas.

Looking back on my first year I can’t believe the progress I have made. When I started, I have to admit, I did not have a clue what was going on! By the end of my 12 months I was a key contact within the Support Finance team and had stepped up to the role of Finance Business Partner for several areas.

Since starting I have made some great friends on the scheme and we often arrange social events outside of work. This is on top of the scheme led socials and events that we get together at every few months, including; the annual summer event (this year we hired a fair ground and spent the day outside in the sun!), quarterly Finance graduate days and the annual Christmas parties.

Key highlights for me over the past year have been progressing with CIMA, making new friends and developing my hard and soft skills in the working environment.

The support has always been there if I have needed it, as people want you to be happy, progress and do well. Managers and scheme leads are flexible and encourage you to create your own tailored progression plan; if you have an idea that isn’t already out there then you are encouraged to put your thoughts forward and create that opportunity for yourself.

I would encourage anyone who is thinking about joining the scheme to absolutely apply. The possibilities are endless!
