Being an avid football player and fan, I was delighted to be offered the opportunity to play on one of the best pitches in the Premier League at St Mary’s stadium. The opportunity came as a result of the Virgin Media’s sponsorship deal with Southampton FC which entitled us to a game at the ground. Around 30 players from across Virgin Media turned up to play on the warm summer evening on Sunday 28th May 2017.
On arrival at the stadium, we filtered into the plush home and away changing rooms where the respective kits were laid out for us in true premier league style. After spending 10 minutes pretending we knew how to use the tactics board, we made our way out the player’s tunnel, greeted by the (5 or 6) fans who had travelled far and wide to witness a true masterclass in amateur football. A short warm up, which consisted of everyone blasting the ball over the bar got everyone fired up and ready to go before the main event which kicked off at 7:15pm. A great, end-to-end game with two evenly matched teams saw some screamers hit the nets that even the likes of Alexis Sanchez and Diego Costa would be proud of. However the home team, sporting the traditional red and white stripes proved the superior side on the night, capitalising on opportunities in the second half to win the game 4-2.
Despite some fiery tempers on the pitch, the teams put their differences and the score line aside for a few beers and Domino’s provided by the club in the players’ lounge after the game.
All in all, a great experience which displayed the true spirit of Virgin Media. Still waiting for my contract to come through in the post…
