My Career as a Finance Graduate

I first came to Virgin Media as a fresh-faced intern in the Group Strategy team back in 2012. I was taken aback by the warm welcome and inclusive culture at Virgin Media and I loved the breadth of responsibilities I was given in my role despite being a third year university undergraduate. At the end of the internship I was invited to join the Finance Graduate Scheme after I’d completed my studies at the University of Bath.

I chose to join Virgin Media’s Finance Graduate scheme because I felt it offered an excellent springboard to kick-start my career and an opportunity to quickly learn three different areas of the business. During the past three years I completed a year in Management Accounts and then elected to spend my second year in Procurement and my final year in the Group Strategy & Corporate Development team.

The roles you take on give you opportunities to get involved in a variety of projects that directly contribute to business critical growth programmes, and the excellent teams you join in each division give you the support to challenge yourself and develop entirely new skillsets.

During the scheme you also have full financial support to complete the CIMA qualification while working – I personally have now completed all exams and come away with two CIMA prizes; the first for the third highest grade worldwide in the Management Case Study exam, then a second for the highest mark in the world in the Strategic Case Study exam.

I believe the competitive spirit in Lee RogersVirgin Media and the talent we have as a business helps to bring out the best in you and keep you on a steep learning curve. Since I finished the scheme I have taken on a new challenge at our parent company, Liberty Global, as a Program manager working in Liberty Global’s Latin American & Caribbean Group (LiLAC) from our office in Denver, Colorado.

My new challenge is to further the development of our Chilean & Puerto Rican operations and manage the integration of Cable & Wireless Communications into the Group; working directly for LiLAC’s President & Chief Operating Officer.

I couldn’t have asked for a better start to my career and I feel that if you have the drive and ambition to seize opportunities – Virgin Media will deliver.
