FAQs

What are the hours of work?

During the first year of your apprenticeship, you’ll usually work 37.5 hours a week. That’s Monday to Friday 8am - 4.30pm, with an hour for lunch. It’s worth pointing out that this is just a guide. Our current shifts cover 8am - 7pm, and include a mixture of late starts and Saturday working. So sometimes your hours will vary.

Are there any shift patterns?

The field-based Technicians you’ll be shadowing for a large part of the time work on a six-day shift pattern with a three-week rotation. At the moment, this means two weeks of 8am - 4.30pm over Monday to Friday with a day off during the week, and one week of 11am - 7pm Monday to Friday. If you’re on the early shift then you’ll still have your Saturday off, using your weekday off as a study day in the office.

What is a study day?

Each week you’ll have a day in the office where you’ll work towards your NVQ in Communication Technology. This’ll also give you a chance to meet with your manager and review your progress.

What does the job actually involve?

As an apprentice Digital Hero you’ll see every part of what we call our customer journey. That’s from the moment a customer signs up with Virgin Media all the way through to installing and servicing our products. Among other things, you’ll be getting to grips with cabling techniques, different types of connections and joints, correct use of industry-specific tools and customer education.

Will I have a main location?

As a national company we have sites across the country. So you will have a base camp, so to speak, from which you’ll work around. But you’ll also get to go out and about to experience a variety of other working environments and locations.

Do you have a company pension scheme?

Yes! And you’ll be eligible to join it!

Are there any benefits attached to a career with VM?

Lots and lots. It’s best if you take a look at our benefits section.

Do they include a chauffeur-driven limousine to take me to and from work?

Unfortunately not. But we can make you feel special in other ways. Again, take a closer look at our benefits section.

What qualifications are available?

During your first year you’ll study for NVQ level 2 in Communication Technology. You’ll need to show your knowledge and understanding, as well as skills and techniques relevant to your job. At the same time you’ll train for a City & Guilds NRSWA (New Road and Street Works Act) qualification in sign, lighting and guarding.

I'm 50 and looking for a change in career, can I apply to the Digital Hero Scheme?

Sure you can. All we ask is that you're over 18 when the scheme starts in August. Applicants of any age can apply.
